Waitrose is slashing the price of its budget range

Waitrose is slashing the price of its budget range but promises a continued
commitment to quality

Here’s a pub quiz question for you: which UK supermarket has the biggest
value range? Aldi and Lidl? Or could it be Tesco who coined the phrase with
its Tesco Value line back in 1993? What about Sainsbury’s Basics with 550
lines of products and produce? The answer is none of the above.

In fact, with 900 budget-friendly products in its range, it is the well-to-do
Waitrose Essentials with the largest value range out there. According to the
supermarket, seven in 10 customers buy products from the Essentials range
whenever they shop.

However, as of today Waitrose has committed £100 million to lower the
prices of its budget range by an average of 14 percent across the board.
Those sausages are now £2, a drop of 24 percent, and even steeper
discounts can be found elsewhere, such as on ham and cheese.

(The DT then did a big taste test)

Overall winner: Waitrose

Claiming five of the seven categories outright and two as a joint winner,
Waitrose was clearly a cut above in terms of overall quality. Though it has a
reputation for being more expensive, when compared like-for-like Waitrose’s
vegetables, tea and butter were roughly the same as competitors. It was
only the meat and cheese products where Waitrose was more expensive, and
worth noting that Waitrose was the only one whose products were high-
welfare and supplied by British farmers across the board.
