That's not exactly how it works - it's not that you can keep going at unlimited speed (if you could) in one direction and there'd always be "more stuff". The matter in the universe started form one central point and is constantly expanding outwards into infinity. So basically the universe has unlimited potential size - unlimited space to expand into (seemingly) - but there is a "diameter" of actual matter in the universe that's constantly expanding outwards.
So I guess to be most accurate they shouldn't say the universe is expanding faster, they should say that the physical matter and energy in the universe is accelerating outwards at an increasing rate.
Of course the truth is, what we actually understand about space on that scale is probably like a 5 year old trying to solve graduate level maths equations. We just don't have the knowledge to understand it, and we may well not actually have the intellectual capability to understand it at all.
