Are you looking forward to the Resident Evil 4 Remake?

Poll will be coming.

For me personally I don't like some of the things that I've heard about the Game, so I'm not in a rush to play it, I'll never say never though.

It's only a couple of days away from release for those of you that are interested.

I have it preordered. What have you heard that you don't like?

Soldier Boy 23-03-2023 09:20 PM

I've liked all of the remakes so far but I've picked unsure PURELY because I loved the original Resi 4 (GameCube) so much. I played through countless times... Did loads of self-imposed "challenge" versions (like no upgrades, handgun only, knife only etc.) so I know the game inside out and will notice changes & probably be a bit purist about them .

I wonder if it might be a bit redundant - I'm guessing they didn't REmake the first one again is because the existing REMake holds up fairly well?

Like sure, compared to a lot of current-gen games it look phoney, but not all

(I acknowledge the rose-tinted lenses btw  )

For me I don't like the fact that I've heard that the tone of the Game is darker, I honestly miss the days when Resident Evil was more like a B-Movie and a bit campy.

And I feel like Ashley being made to be capable means that some iconic levels from the original Game are either going to be edited or omitted entirely.

Don't get me wrong, I know that I'm probably letting my own nostalgia for the original version cloud my judgment, hopefully it is a great Game for you and other people that play it.

And tbh even despite me making this thread, I'll probably be open to giving the Game a go as long as the original RE4 is always available.

That's fair. Code Veronica is one of my favourite RE games and I'd be disappointed if they ever remade and toned back the crazy campness of that game  from footage I've seen of this remake (without trying to spoil too much) it seems decently faithful to the original though, whilst modernising some parts. I can't say Ashley being a bit more competent will be a complaint for me tbh.

Code Veronica is a great Game, it's also the only mainline Resi Game that I've failed to beat when I gave it a go, good times.

Tbf I reckon that the Game will be well made, I just am unsure if it's gonna be my type of Game.

And with Ashley I would normally agree with you that making her more competent would make for a better character and Game, I do however though feel that Ashley served an important function to some of the levels in the original Game, and there I say it but even by Resi standards it does come off as unrealistic (by their own standards imo) that the President's Daughter is going to be capable of taking on a cult and all sorts of stuff that were in the original RE4, personally I'd have preferred more levels on Ada if there were going to be changes to the levels personally.

Well yeah, while making her a "Damsel in Distress" might have been a bit of a stereotype, but not every female character can be competent, especially daughters of presidents :joker:

Soldier Boy 25-03-2023 12:15 PM

Ashley was an absolute liability :joker: "Leon! Leon, heeelp! Heeelp! Leon!"

It would be daft if they made her into some sort of ninja or secret agent but let's say "Ellie in TLOU".

I always took it to be a deliberate throwback "trope" though with the castle setting? Leon is Mario, Ashley is Princess Peach.

Well like TS has said, the Game was to some extent borrowing the Princess Peach trope with Ashley, which I think actually worked for the character given that she is not meant to be trained in any way to handle situations like this.

I read the other day that the original Resi 4 was cancelled (as Resi) and spun off into the first Devil May Cry :omgno:. But some of the assets and ideas still made it into Resi 4. The "castle" part of the game makes SO much more sense with that in mind.

Basically the idea was that they wanted 4 to be more action-focussed but found that they went too far into action and scaled back - but they still LIKED the action game they had made - just not as a Resi game - and thus Dante was born :joker:. I guess he does have Leon's floppy hair...

That story is shocking isn't it?

You really can see some of the similarities tone wise between DMC and earlier Resi titles imo.

I thought the "leaning more heavily into action" aspect was interesting - with 5 being even more action oriented than 4, and then 6 being mostly a straight up action/3rd person shooter game (and getting heavy criticism for it). But it was clearly the direction they wanted to take with series at one point.

Ironically of course - The DMC games are far better action games than Resi 5 or 6 :joker:.

I do wonder where they'll go next with the remakes or if 4 is going to be the last... 5 would be a difficult one to remake and 6, I just don't know if there's any desire for one. I think a Resi 6 remake would need to just be a whole new game but still cover the same basic story elements. A lot of it is kind of redundant in terms of the over-arching story.

I like Resi 5 and 6, but I wouldn't want remakes of them, but then again I'm not a huge remake person anyway.

The only remakes that I want are for Yakuza: Like A Dragon and Sonic Frontiers, especially Sonic Frontiers because £45 for a barren Open World with hollow platforming isn't acceptable and should never be acceptable to anybody that likes Video Games imo.

Yakuza 7 admittedly is a personal preference to get the proper Yakuza mainline gameplay instead of the busted RPG version that the Game has.

And when it comes to the last four mainline Resident Evil Games I feel like they all have problems tbh, but my preference is for 5 & 6 over 7 & Village because yes 7 & Village are more Horror than 5 & 6, but 5 & 6 have the proper tone and style of Resident Evil's narrative, plus it's got the Resident Evil cast in 5 & 6 rather than guest appearances from Chris Redfield in 7 & Village, and 5 & 6 are in third person perspective which is my preference for Resident Evil Games.

And DMC are Hack And Slash Games tbf, so the Action should be strong in those Games.

Have you ever watched the DMC Anime? It's not exactly the same as the Games, but it's a fun Show imo.

Soldier Boy 29-05-2023 09:46 AM

Out of interest Mock - have you tried the more-recent 3rd person mode of Resi 8 and if so, did you find it improved the game for you over 1st person? I thought it was an interesting addition as it brings it in line with the bulk of Resi games (if you want to). Leaves only Resi 1 and 7 as main line games without a 3rd person over-the-shoulder version. I think they COULD do a 3rd person mode for 7, if they wanted.

I do also personally think they should do a REmake of the original at some point too. At this point as they've been doing all the others, it's weird that they started with 2 and not 1, though I think that's because initially they only planned to do Resi 2 and didn't foresee how successful it would be.
