Were the Irish the first slaves in America?
A good historical video here via Larry Elder. Make of it what you will. It sounds more realistic than gender studies or race baiting which is what the modern people are used to. It just may interest our Irish members like Cherie and Niamh if they're interested in their countries history?
There is a short advertisement halfway through. Larry has to put the advertisement in, because this is his job and he has to make a living. The advertisement is about investing in Gold. |
I know that reports of those times that say that the Irish faced a lot of discrimination in America.
Weren't they called the "Irish N-word" by Americans? |
"No Blacks, No Irish"

As for "first", I guess it depends on when the British Empire and its (former/) colonies made contact with slave traders from Africa?
(might be explained in video, didn't watch) |
The US was cobbled together with heavy use of indentured servitude of Europeans - which is really just slavery with an out-clause.
It is worth mentioning though, as to not minimise things, that indentured servants were generally not mistreated in the same way that slaves were, nor were Irish slaves abused as badly as black slaves in the US. By the time slavery was abolished there was some next-level dehumanisation of black slaves and thus black people in general. |
I thought this was common knowledge? Most Irish people know this already Alf

I can recommended a book called White Cargo by Don Jordan and Michael Walsh.
