Ron DeSantis is expected to launch his 2024 bid for the Republican presidential nomination in a live interview on Elon Musk's Twitter on Wednesday.

In doing so, the Florida governor is bypassing more traditional methods of kicking off a campaign, such as an in-person rally, a big TV interview or a slickly produced online video.

While he will eventually do all of these, opting for Twitter as his first choice makes a notable statement about the kind of campaign he will run - and the type of supporter he hopes to prioritise.

The event - details of which are still unclear - is all but guaranteed to provide a friendly audience for Mr DeSantis.

Speaking at an event on Tuesday, Mr Musk said he would not endorse any candidate "at this time".

He said he voted for President Biden in 2020, and has described himself as a centrist, although he did say last year that he would support Mr DeSantis were he to run for president.

Mr DeSantis' appearance on Twitter's live broadcast platform known as Spaces will give him the ear of Mr Musk's huge fan base. Mr Musk is viewed warmly by most conservatives after he bought Twitter and began using the platform to elevate conservative voices.

By aligning himself with Mr Musk and Twitter, Mr DeSantis is also aligning himself with the more aggressive style of conservatism that has filled social media in recent years.

It could also be seen as a finger in the eye of his chief political rival, former US President Donald Trump - and a sign that the Florida governor will not cede the online battlefield to his 2024 rival.

Mr Trump was forced off Twitter after the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol and started his own competing social media service, Truth Social.

Should make life interesting

Not surprising.

He's basically the person that "nutters online" think Trump is. Say what you will about how good or bad that is for the GOP.

He's got no chance, not against the people's President.

We're still in the time of Trump, and he has unfinished business.

Given his affect on Florida, I’d say he doesn’t have the best of chances.

At the end of last month, the Florida governor had $88m (£71m) in a fund, Friends of Ron DeSantis, that was raised for his Florida re-election campaign and can be transferred to his presidential bid.

He also reportedly has about $30m (£24m) controlled by an independent committee that his allies can use to support his campaign.

Donald Trump, by contrast, reported a combined $18.8m (£15m) in fundraising over the first three months of 2023, with $13m (£10m) in his main campaign account.

Trump has a far better agenda though. Trump wants to destroy the current system that allows elites to get away with all sorts of the worst crimes, the people are on board with that.

DeSantis Is part of that elite system. His pushing of the vaccines highlighted that, while Trump left vaccine decisions up to each state and even though he took the vaccine, he did say about it being a free choice.

Trump is the people's man. He's on our side. And that's why the elite do everything to try to destroy him. A lesser person would have given in by now. Trump is a fighter. And he fights for us.

He'll hopefully be laughed off the stage after banning harmless Books in School Libraries.:joker:

Are they harmless though?

Nearly every book which twitter whinges about being "banned" has at least some material which could be seen as inappropriate.

That's no way to reach everyone though, especially older voters.

I'm all for the media fatcats being denied the cheese, and new forms of media stealing their thunder ... but we're not there yet.

it's going to be an interesting one because a significant proportion of dem voters don't like the woke agenda either

By and large, the Dems are like our Tories; leastways, more than they are the "American Labour Analogue."

Most people don't align with the "woke agenda", or at least the aspects of it which push race divisions or allow biological males into women's spaces.
