Alzheimer's drug has been hailed as a "turning point" by scientists.
|
Sadly the cost of these New Dugs are around
$25,000 a go. So unless the price lowers the National Health may not be able to afford it Was Debated on Ch5HD AM Live 1st show with Jeremy Vine at the start |

BBC News Text:
[The i's lead story is about a study which found erectile dysfunction drugs, like Viagra, reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer's by 18%. However, scientists are warning men against starting to take the drugs as a precautionary measure. Dr Leah Mursaleen, of Alzheimer's Research UK, told the paper the study is "encouraging" but doesn't confirm whether the drugs can "slow or stop the disease".] https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cp...27974.jpg.webp |
NHS needs to be abolished asap

BBC News Text:
[The i leads with a study that has found that anyone with two copies of the APOE4 gene has at least a 95% chance of developing Alzheimer's. It reports that the "genetic breakthrough raises hopes that patients can be identified and treated earlier".] https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cp...60a72.jpg.webp |

No Labour is keeping it. |
…I wonder how many have been treated with donanemab since the trials were completed…it’s good that the gene detection can predict it much earlier, though…

Anything that will help to ease the uncertainty and fear of it is extremely welcome. |

[QUOTE=arista;11310348]Sadly the cost of these New Dugs are around
$25,000 a go. So unless the price lowers the National Health may not be able to afford it Was Debated on Ch5HD AM Live It costs a lot more than that to keep an adult in a care/nursing home. My grandmother has vascular dementia. She has been in a nursing home for just under 16 months and because she had assets, has been a self payer. So far its cost her over £100,000. Now the government have had to step in and fund for her because she's down to her last £6k. Apart from her VD she's fit and healthy and likely to live quite a few more years. |

Very Sorry to hear that. I assume if the Labour Party take over, changes will happen. |

And with the Alzheimer's Drug, I'm expecting that the price will come down once there's more of it in circulation. |
|
The nice thing is in testing this, they'll likely find more effective ways to treat over time. It's just the start.
|
…I’m not sure with this, I’d obviously love to think it’s the ‘breakthrough drug’ that’s being hailed by some but then there are others who aren’t so convinced so it’s a bit conflicted, I feel…and still has some very concerning ‘side effects’ like bleeding on the brain…which is about as severe as a side effect can get…so hadn’t been approved in Europe/the UK…and now it has but with no mention of those side effects not being a serious concern anymore…?…it feel very quick…maybe COVID vaccine type quick….
|
i think that a side effect that causes brain swelling/bleeding is very concerning. It may well be dependent on other circulatory system health etc. Also, what most people don't realise is that just about everyone has some form of brain imperfection/defect. Messing with the brain has never been an exact science and we are a long way from it being exact
|
Sadly the NHS can not fund this new medicine,
anyway. At £20,000 per portion it is far too high a cost. Private Customers can pay it etc. |
NHS is a disgrace.
|
It may not be affordable at the moment, but it is a breakthrough.
By the time it is affordable on the NHS we may be lucky enough to have eradicated the terrible side effects. In the meantime it would be worth considering that those younger ones that suffer with this should be accepted for the drug. |
Medical research is an area that AI has improved beyond anyones expectation so we should expect many more spectacular advances in the near future. The cost will always be an issue though
