US soldier held in North Korea after crossing border

The soldier who crossed into North Korea is Private 2nd Class Travis King, officials have told the BBC's US partner CBS News

As we previously reported, an official told CBS the soldier was being escorted out of the country for disciplinary reasons and had gone through airport security, but managed to make his way out of the terminal before joining a border tour.

A third source, a defence official, later told CBS that the soldier had "wilfully" gone across the border. His motivation remains unclear.

Officials are waiting to confirm his identity until his next of kin have been notified that he is being held by North Korea, CNN reports

A US soldier is being held in North Korea after crossing the border from South Korea without authorisation

He was reportedly in the process of being transported back to the US for disciplinary reasons before he turned around at the airport and joined a Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) border tour

The US State and Defense Departments have said that during the tour he crossed the border "wilfully, of his own volition", but did not say he defected

Officials are trying to notify the soldier's next of kin, the White House said

Meanwhile multiple news outlets have reported that the man's name is Travis King, with the rank of private second class in the US Army

The Pentagon says it is concerned for the soldier's welfare and is "closely monitoring and investigating the situation"

I remember a documentary about some Americans who defected to North Korea and were treated as celebrities and used to show how desirable living there supposedly was. Maybe this guy thinks the same will happen to him

He might have been facing some serious disciplinary action although it's very strange that he was able to turn around and join a border tour with no one noticing

the whole thing is weird, he was basically being expelled from the forces. Booked a border trip that takes 3 days to arrange and requires all sorts of personal details.

I still remember the poor young American that came back from there in a coma after being tortured and died a few days later

Yeah didn't he try and take a flag or something from his hotel. Sentenced to years in prison there then became mysteriously ill
