The actress Amanda Abbington has withdrawn from Strictly Come Dancing, the show has announced.

Abbington, 51, who starred in Sherlock and Mr Selfridge, missed last weekend's show for medical reasons but had been expected to return next week.

In her last appearance on the show, Abbington scored 31 for a quick-footed foxtrot to Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac.

But she almost didn't make it to the start of the series, being struck down by food poisoning weeks before.

On Monday the host of spin-off show It Takes Two, Fleur East, read out a statement from the organisers.

"Amanda Abbington is unable to continue in Strictly Come Dancing and has decided to withdraw from the competition. The show wishes her all the best for the future," it said.

East then played a clip of Abbington's best moments on the show, adding: "Amanda, we are sending you all of our love."

Abbington, who is paired with professional Italian dancer Giovanni Pernice, has not yet commented on her withdrawal, but after missing last Saturday's show she shared on social media a picture of the late actor Robin Williams, who suffered from depression.

It was accompanied by the words: "People don't fake depression… they fake being okay. Remember that. Be kind."

Four people have been voted off Strictly so far this series: Les Dennis, Nikita Kanda, Jody Cundy and Eddie Kadi.

Abbington became involved in controversy in August when a tweet re-emerged in which she had criticised a drag show aimed at parents and children.

She apologised for the remarks after some fans threatened to boycott the show.

The actress is perhaps best known for her role in Sherlock, in which she played Mary Watson alongside her real-life ex-husband Martin Freeman.

Oh no. Anyway

Mystic Mock 21-10-2023 11:38 PM

She isn't lasting long after the bye.

Nicky91 23-10-2023 03:53 PM

she has withdrawn from the show

and bashes too much ''inclusivity'' of this show, she now regrets having signed up in the first place

Kate! 23-10-2023 04:13 PM

Don't believe this nonsense. She's too professional to say any of that stuff.

Vanessa 23-10-2023 04:14 PM

We don't know yet. She has a bye and should be back next week.

Don't watch it then, and spare us all the crap you come out with?

Sounds like she's suffering from depression from what little she's said.

She certainly didn't say she's opposed to same sex pairings. Stop talking bollocks.

she should've done the show like 5 years earlier or something before all these weird celebrity sign up choices

Like I said, don't watch it then.

the Real dancing season for me personally starts in February nowadays

My Hot Charismatic Daddy King Choreo Vadim Garbuzov, also he's straight, has a girlfriend but LOVES same-sex partnerships for an added challenge

same-sex dancing made him a better pro, also with female partners too, first he was early exit, but now he is more in it for the long runs

hope Vincent Gross takes part :fc: we need another pretty boy with talent

Black Dagger 23-10-2023 04:32 PM

Do you never get tired?

AnnieK 23-10-2023 05:10 PM

Nicky, please stop with the trolling.

Its a shame she has left, she was a great dancer

joeysteele 23-10-2023 06:10 PM

It's unfortunate but if she has left for health issues.
That's likely the best thing to do.

i posted a official BBC news link with the actual reason of her withdrawing in the OP now

it's very sad, imagine not being allowed an own opinion, some sickos on social media going as far as bullying her into a depression

:bawling: she was one of my mom's favourites this year (whom also knows her from Mr Selfridge)

No, it's not true. And he's amended his OUTRAGEOUS first post in this thread, I see. He's one of the people that moderators can't see.

I know that the Twitter crowd were rallying hatred against her.
