The burning question at this time of the year

Is Die Hard a Christmas movie or not?

bots 11-12-2023 11:46 PM

yes

Mystic Mock 12-12-2023 12:23 AM

I personally wouldn't put it in the same bracket as Home Alone or The Grinch.

its an event that takes place at christmas, so it's a christmas film or are we saying that a christmas film must either be about santa or jesus?

I say yes

The better question would be, what about Batman Returns? Is that a Christmas film? Personally, it ain't Christmas for me without the sound of Danny DeVito's Penguin coughing up big globs of black gunk from his mouth.

Yes to Die Hard

…I think it is quite a bit Home Alone, Mock…only it’s an office building, rather than a house…no one knows he’s there/like Kevin… and the bad guys are there to steal …just like Harry and Marv, but Kevin/John MacClane keeps ruining their plans and causing them mishaps etc…he’s in his own creating lots of traps etc and generally annoying them …and then he’s reunited with his family at the end to spend a lovely Christmas with them…it’s a perfect Christmas movie formula, Mock…

It's just Die Hard is more like 24 or 007 to me, rather than the stereotypical Christmas Movie.

But I do see your point tbf.

You're the only person that I've ever spoke to about this topic that has genuinely managed to make Die Hard and Home Alone feel similar to each other in tone.

Again I can see your point, I think that it's the Action that throws me off with seeing Die Hard as a Christmas Movie.

…(…I think…)…if there was a formula or tick list that applied to define a Christmas movie, it would more or less tick everything off that list, Mock…?…when we think about it….we have horror type versions of Christmas movies and comedy versions and romance versions and adventure versions and musical versions and…many, many genre versions that are all under the umbrella of ‘Christmas movie’….so an action version is absolutely within that as well, I feel…and that’s what Die Hard fills the role of…

It's a bit meta these days. When people first started asking this, I think it was perhaps debatable. However... the question has been asked around Die Hars/Christmas for so many years that they are UNDENIABLY linked now, so yes, in 2023 Die Had is 100% a Christmas film. Of course it's not up there with the core 5:

Home Alone
Gremlins
Elf
Love, Actually
The Muppets Christmas Carol
