I need some advice.

My landlord is asking for an increase on my rent. I pay 950 pounds month .
He wants 350 pounds more.
That is a 30% increase in one year!
Are they allowed to do that?
I'm thinking of moving. The flat is getting way too expensive.

Here's some information on it. What does it say about rent increases in your tenancy agreement? That seems like a crazy jump though

Private landlords are a law unto themselves.

It could be he has just come out of a fixed rate mortgage and his costs have increased or it could be that he is just taking the pass as the rental market has gone mad.

I don't know what it's like to rent in London, but the rent sounds really high to me.

sadly it is very common now, can you speak to him and try and negotiate a lesser amount?

…as Annie said, it could be that the increase is reflective of his own increase in mortgage payments or it could be that he’s taking advantage of that situation because he feels he can get a higher income…strangely in my area, although rentals seem to be highly priced as well…many are saying that deposits aren’t required, which seems to conflict really, but that seems to be how it is…anyway, let us know how the situation progresses for you, Vanessa……

How long have you been in that flat Ness, because if feels like you have been there a long time, you are a good tenant, pay your rent on time, keep the place nice, working, not noisy, he could swop you out for someone who does not do any of the above, so he needs to think long and hard about it especially if his mortgage is paid and he is just being greedy
