Parents share anger as Scottish school erases children with complex needs from photos

PARENTS have received an apology from a Scottish council after a photography firm offered alternative pictures with or without children with “complex” needs.

A photographer working for Tempest Photography took two separate photos of the P5 class at Aboyne Primary School in Aberdeenshire, with children with additional support needs (ASN) reportedly removed from one set.

Parents were then sent a link with both versions to choose from.

Aberdeenshire Council has since apologised to parents, stating the decision was not taken by the school and has immediately removed the link to the photos.

Meanwhile, Cornwall-based Tempest Photography – which employs local photographers to take school photos across the UK – said it had launched an investigation into the matter.

Natalie Pinnell, whose daughter Erin was among those excluded from a set of photographs, told the Press and Journal it felt like having her child “erased from history”.

She told the paper: “I am absolutely heartbroken. Furious.”

She added: “A lot of the other parents have decided not to purchase their school photos in support. That means a lot.

“To give people the option to erase my daughter from history for the sake of optics is frankly inhumane. One of the cruellest things that I’ve ever experienced.

“Me and the other parents just feel devastated beyond belief.”

Pinnell also said the school was not aware of the decision to take two sets of photos and immediately investigated once alerted by parents.

A second parent, Lisa Boyd, also told the newspaper her daughter Lily, a wheelchair user, was removed from an alternative photo, with the nine-year-old’s twin sister devastated.

Tempest Photography said: “We are currently investigating the situation with the school, and have no further comment.”

Aberdeenshire Council said: “We are aware that following Aboyne Primary School’s recent school class photographs, links to purchase the pictures included images with and without complex needs provision pupils.

“Whilst this was not a decision taken by the school, we absolutely appreciate the distress and hurt this has caused some parents and carers and we are sincerely sorry.

“The issue has been taken up with the photography company directly as this is totally unacceptable.”

The council added: “Aboyne is an inclusive school and every single child should be included, engaged and involved in their learning and school experiences.”

The PA news agency has asked Tempest Photography and Aberdeenshire Council for additional comment.

…yeah, children can obviously be added to class photos if they were absent on the day that the photographer came…they’ll just take an image from a previous photo and edit it in…

Ammi 30-03-2024 05:50 AM

…it would be interesting to know more about this story tbh…but very unfortunate decision or alternative photo to offer parents…I’m hoping that no parent said ‘yes please’ to that one with some pupils removed…

…school photographers are quite often recommended by other schools in the area so one school no longer using them can lead to others doing the same…I feel the impact of this on the business will be a lot bigger than just one school decision…

Ammi 30-03-2024 06:24 AM

…we have had situations of ‘option class photographs of this one or that one ’…but for entirely different reasons…

Are Tempest not the largest supplier of rip off school photos?

….as I said earlier, it would be interesting to know full context to all of this …this is just one trust pilot review so it’s in no way representative…and overall, their rating isn’t great at all…it’s very low…

I have always found this company to be…
I have always found this company to be very good and efficient. They always follow the direction of the school's requests to the letter. So, with this in mind, I would question who is actually to blame in the recent incident. And, even if it were the photographer, why didn't any of the staff question what he was doing? I suggest people find out the facts before becoming keyboard warriors on here with their assumptions. I would like to add that whoever is at fault, whether it is member of staff or the photographer (not the company as this is not their ethos), then they themselves should publicly apologise for this unacceptable behaviour.
Date of experience: 29 March 2024

…but it feels like there are some missing links here with this story … because to offer this option would be so like ending their own business and they surely would know that…

Cherie 30-03-2024 08:46 AM

Its pretty disgusting to offer two different photos, that said I have experienced this when my younger son was getting his first holy communion, there was a profoundly disabled girl in a wheelchair also getting hers and she attended the pre communion sessions and one of the Mums didnt want her in the group and tried to ensure her daughter was not in the same group as this little girl when she took her communion :skull:
