Conservative Plan to arrest nuisance begging & some rough sleeping

[In some cases, rough sleepers could be
jailed for nuisance begging or rough sleeping,
and even for smelling bad, MPs have said.
It comes as new stats reveal
620 homeless young people were arrested
under the existing Vagrancy Act between 2019 and 2023,
including 29 of 10 to 15-year-olds.]

Such a display of compassion is sure to reverse the Tory 20 point gap in the polls :umm2:

Sadly True

Crimson Dynamo 01-04-2024 05:47 PM

be good if they can rid city centers of all the pro beggars

you have ones in Ireland getting into expensive Audi cars at the end of their shifts

:umm2:

Beso 01-04-2024 05:57 PM

Well your honour...I was going to book myself into a hotel room, but for some reason they were all full, so the cold dangerous doorway of argos was all that I had left.

Oliver_W 01-04-2024 06:13 PM

Why not go the whole hog and just outlaw being poor?

joeysteele 01-04-2024 08:07 PM

To be fair.
There are Conservative MPs who are extremely unhappy about this
Which is good to see.
If they do rebel against it, I'll applaud them.

However from this PM and his shocking Ministers, really should anyone be surprised the homeless would be a heartless and easy target for Sunak and co.

Under the powers, police officers and local authority workers will be able to confront “nuisance” beggars and order them to move on while encouraging them to make use of accommodation services and mental health support.

Another new offence will be created for criminal gangs organising begging networks, something Whitehall officials believe is often used to facilitate illegal activities.

The Tories coming out with the important policies that everyone's asked for.

In fantasyland, maybe.

bots 01-04-2024 11:00 PM

it's obviously a current problem in tunbridge wells

Ammi 02-04-2024 06:54 AM

…’government announce prison space shortage, a shortfall of around 2300 prison spaces by 2025…’….throw the criminals out and pop the homeless in…?…I mean, there isn’t any other conclusion when they’re not able to pay fines because they’re homeless and jobless…

…this government has been heartless through the reign, I guess they might as well end in the same vein…why change their ethos…

Absolutely.

Well said.

…yes indeed, Arista…the builders need that income and that living from building prisons because of the halt to the house/home building in the death of the housing market with the high/impossible interest rates of this government…it’s all a grand plan, eh…prison cells are the new build accommodation in vogue…?…

bots 02-04-2024 07:59 AM

it's not something that has been brought up randomly in an election year. I don't know what the true intention of it is, but there is clearly something else behind this

Ammi 02-04-2024 08:14 AM

…well no, it’s not a random thing…it’s kind of part of their whole process and thought and I think they’ve made that perfectly clear though their reign…make the rich richer and the poor poorer has been done before so let’s criminalise them…through COVID times, the higher powers really showed how little they valued life ‘of the common people…’….so the homeless and disadvantaged and vulnerable never really had a chance, did they…and if they’re going to leave then they’re going to try to leave as much of their dystopia in place as they can…/…their legacy…

Ammi 02-04-2024 08:19 AM

…what would actually be a real change and a real step forward would be to focus on the criminal/prison system as it is and sentencing being upheld to the length given and not halved to a ridiculous time served…stop looking to criminalise more people and focus in those who are being released daily with very lenient sentencing having been applied to their crime…

thesheriff443 02-04-2024 08:29 AM

Unfortunately we live in a world where good heart people get preyed upon by scum bags
Even genuinely homeless people have to compete with fake bastards , men and women who on a daily basis scam the kind hearted or bully others into giving them money or food/drinks

The knee jerk reaction is those poxy conservatives are targeting the homeless but there is more to it than that
There are organisations that visit homeless people and offer them help and advice

I want to see genuine people get helped and support I don’t want to see the streets littered with scum bags taking advantage of kind hearted people or those that are to soft to say no.

I’ve heard many a time someone asking for money and saying they don’t carry cash only for the scum bag to say there is a cash machine just there.

There is apparently around 40 Conservative backbenchers who are opposed to this .
I'd like to think that in the end they will act against it and scupper this abominable thinking.

Sadly I fear they'll make noises but then crawl into line when the crunch comes.

I think this is obscene thinking.
Really sick minds even proposing it.

Smug and awful Gillian Keegan was on TV this morning and asked did she support those 40 Conservative MPs against this
Then with her sickening almost fixed mocking smile on her face, stated she'd support the main government line.
Absolutely horrible Minister she is .

Well I now know that I don't like Gillian Keegan.

Cherie 02-04-2024 09:53 AM

Isn't this Suella Bravermans play for the leadership, a policy to appeal to the hard right of the party, now she has lost her flight to God knows where Home office gig

Crimson Dynamo 02-04-2024 09:58 AM

its part of a bill being discussed as part of our democratic process, not law

"reports have suggested"

Obviously if "reports had suggested" anything about say Harry and Meghan we would get the standard page of protests about it being conjecture etc

Yes Joey,
Sunak
may not get this passed in Parliament.
