Always check your notes when drawing money out, I've been stung today!

I drew 100 pounds out of the post office and later discovered that 4 of them were counterfeit, when I tried to use 1. I went to the bank and they checked them all, only 1 was genuine. My bank are trying to help with the post office but they are saying I need to prove that's where I got them? Fuming.

The Post office has full CCTV facing the customer

Vanessa 11-07-2024 02:14 PM

It's your money. They need to change the notes for you.

Niamh. 11-07-2024 02:15 PM

I mean you can prove that you got money from them today, maybe they should be checking their other cash in case they have more counterfeit money

I only use Banks to get Cash Out
as sometimes when its in 10's
you get an extra 10-pound note.

As New Notes stick together a lot

Thats the Banks Problem
not mine

Regardless of whether they have camera's (which I'm sure they do) or not they would have a record of her having withdrawn money from whichever branch. How she could prove it was those specific notes she got is another question, not sure how that could be proven

Did you use the counter or the cash machine at the post office?

The counter. They accept I was there but not that they gave me those specific notes. I'm so upset. I've not been able to pay my keep or anything.

Kate! 11-07-2024 02:50 PM

It was 5 x 20 pound notes. 4 of them weren't genuine.

Who discovered they were fake?

AnnieK 11-07-2024 02:58 PM

What happened to the notes - did the Bank keep them or give them back to you?

The post office have retained them for now, they said they will get back to me but were quite insistent they didn't give them to me.

I'm surprised a financial agent like the Post Office wouldn't use a note checker when taking cash from people (presumably the fake notes were taken from another customer initially)

AnnieK 11-07-2024 03:04 PM

They are meant to report any fake notes to the Police and should have taken your details as the Police will want to know where the notes came from. I would go back to the Post Office and ask if they have been reported to the Police and then possibly ask for the reference number and speak to the Police yourself and ask what the procedure is as you are now out of pocket.

Yes. I would go to the police and report it if they aren't going to do it

I've never seen them check in my branch.

Really? That's odd. I can't even remember the last time I was in a shop where they don't check notes never mind an actual financial institute. pretty bad really that they don't check

They should check. Sometimes it's hard to tell otherwise.

It was hard to tell. Apparently the fakes are shinier.

Swan 11-07-2024 03:32 PM

Crazy that a Post Office would give you fake bank notes, not notice they're fake (meaning they must be good enough to fool a post office who usually deal with large sums of cash daily) then the first shopkeeper you take them to notices 4/5 are fake. Incredibly unlucky.

Vanessa 11-07-2024 03:35 PM

I would contact the police. Which is what the post office was supposed to do.

No the shopkeeper only identified one note, it was my bank who told me it was 4 of them. I went there just to make sure. Then I went back to the post office.
