If you believed they put a man on the moon.

55 years today (or yesterday now to be technical for us in the UK) USA supposedly put a man on the moon.

The most watched piece of television in history.

Did it really happen?

Why hasn't it happened since with all the technology advance's since then?

Mystic Mock 21-07-2024 12:27 AM

We're too busy trying to reach Mars in the hope of Terraforming it.

Expensive and pointless ( why go where we’ve already been )

i watched it when it happened and loved every minute of it. I don't really care if it was faked or not. The space race itself was responsible for providing all sorts of benefits that the population of the world went on to use in their every day lives and that wouldn't have happened otherwise

Livia 21-07-2024 11:53 AM

We were in the middle of a cold war and a space race. Russia watched every step of the moon missions. If it was a hoax I'm sure they'd have mentioned it.

Exactly plus what is the chance not one of the thousands of NASA workers breaking rank and selling the hoax story for millions

Yes, people are notoriously unreliable. And calling it a hoax is a terrible slight on Buzz Aldrin, one of the biggest living legends in the world imo.

things were much different in those days. The very real rivalry between the usa and russia would mean that keeping a hoax quiet was a patriotic duty. I didn't think it was a hoax at the time, but i do question some aspects of it now

All those people, you think they'd not find one that would provide some evidence and become rich beyond their wildest dreams? Like I said, people are generally unreliable.

What aspects do you question, out of interest?

things like the camera shots, how were they so well done, we saw the guy taking the small step, but he was the only one on the moon. Also, a flag moved in the breeze in a vacuum. Thing is they would have rehearsed what they were planning in a big warehouse prior to launch, it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that they had the crew up in space and a bunch of actors enacting it in a warehouse

thesheriff443 21-07-2024 01:05 PM

Yes they went to the moon and another massive leap for nasa and the USA was the creation of the space shuttle

Crimson Dynamo 21-07-2024 02:10 PM

Im amazed noone has thought about going to the sun, especially in winter when its dark for ages so plenty opportunity

Keeping it hush hush for nearly 60 years is just not conceivable

A proud and brave man risking his life to push the boundaries of what was physically possible would be p1ssed off
Basically calling him a liar

Yeah, the simple explanation for it not being repeated was that goal of beating the Soviets had been achieved and there was no need to continue with it.

The same is true of the current plans to go back to the moon. In this case it is about beating (or keeping up with) China.

Well you should do. I chose the lyrics from that song for my title.

MTVN 23-07-2024 07:42 AM

I always think it's interesting people obsess about the first moon landing when wondering if it was staged but you never hear much about the subsequent landings

Regarding the flag thing, if it helps, the moon's surface is NOT a vacuum, the moon has a very thin atmosphere mostly made up of inert gases. It has no oxygen, but a "breeze" doesn't necessarily mean "air".

I think the moon landing definitely happened. Whether the recorded first step is the actual first step is another matter. I sometimes wonder if they did a "OK Neil now you go back in, and do the one small step speech thing..."

He didn't ask him if it was faked, he stuck his finger in Aldrin's face and called him a coward and a liar. I'd have punched him myself.

I don't think nobody is obsessing here.

It's just a thread with a question to mark the 55th anniversary.
