Soldier stabbed near Kent Army barracks…

…I couldn’t see a thread but apologies Arista if there is one…

A British soldier has suffered serious injuries following a stabbing near an Army barracks in Kent.

Police responded to reports of an assault on Tuesday afternoon and rushed the victim to hospital.

Witnesses described hearing screaming, while there were reports of the suspect launching more than one attack on the victim.

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder.

Here’s what we know so far about the stabbing…

What we know

Kent Police said they were called to a report of a serious assault in Sally Port Gardens in Gillingham, Kent, at around 5.55pm on Tuesday, 23 July.

The road is near Brompton Barracks, the headquarters of the British Army’s 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment.

The victim was discovered with “serious injuries” and was airlifted to hospital for treatment. Kent Police said his injuries were “consistent with stab wounds” and they described his condition as “serious”.

An Army spokesman confirmed that the victim is a soldier. They are working with Kent Police to help with the investigation.

A 24-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the force said. A cordon is currently in place around the scene, while there is an ongoing police presence in the area.

Defence secretary John Healey described the attack as “shocking”.

What we don't know

Police have not released the identity of the victim. We also do not know his exact age, other than being in his 40s.

While it has been confirmed that the victim is a soldier, the Army declined to comment on reports in the media that he was in uniform at the time of the attack.

We do not know any details about the arrested man, other than his age. Police have not given any other information as to his identity.

There are no details on the motive behind the attack and we do not know if the suspect knew the victim.

Eyewitnesses to the attack told The Sun that they saw the suspect wearing a ski mask and a NASA bomber jacket riding a moped before the incident. However these details have so far not been confirmed by police.

It was also reported by the eyewitness that the victim’s wife tried to fight off the attacker, but these details have also yet to be confirmed.

According to Metro, the victim staggered towards his house but was chased down and attacked for a second time.

Yahoo News UK has contacted Kent Police for an update.

Eyewitness accounts

One eyewitness told The Sun that the soldier received injuries to his face and the rest of his body.

They told the publication: “Blood was everywhere as I tried to apply pressure to his wounds until the police arrived…

“When the guy’s wife came out and started trying to pull the guy off he didn’t even try to hurt her.“

Another witness described what they say were the weapons used in the attack. They said: “This was with two kitchen knives, about nine to 10 inches long, and there were about seven of us there who witnessed it.

“The soldier was in uniform. He works at the barracks, lives in Sally Port Gardens and was walking home.“

The witness said the attacker rode off on the moped before he was arrested.

He licked the victim's blood?

This guy is not just evil, but a complete and utter freak.

Hopefully the Soldier will pull through.:fc:

Police not treating this as terror-related. Attacker described as a "local man".

We'll see.

Whoever they are I guarantee that you will be told that they had mental health problems.

People not related to terrorism don't go out and try to kill soldiers. It's just a fact. How can the police say anything different

From the bbc website...

The soldier was in uniform when he was attacked near his home on Tuesday.

The Home Office said the stabbing is not being treated as terror-related, and is believed to be the result of a mental health episode.

Absolutely terrifying.
My son is staying on an army camp for a week from tomorrow and they were meant to be travelling to camp in uniform but they have now been told to travel in civvies so as not to draw any attention to themselves

Poor man - hope he recovers quickly.

I know you're going to worry, but I'm sure he'll be fine, Annie. X

Crimson Dynamo 24-07-2024 10:16 AM

They have not ruled out terrorism as a motive, The Telegraph understands.

bots 24-07-2024 10:16 AM

they really have to stop saying it was mental illness by default. You can basically say that anyone who attempts to murder someone is mentally ill

He'll be fine in normal clothes. But there are so many nutters around it's frightening.

Yeah not exactly what you want to hear just before he heads off. On the plus side you know they're going to be extra secure now because of this.

Why though?

It was just a man with mental health problems:smug:

Ammi 24-07-2024 10:33 AM

…yeah what Niamh said, Annie…security will be at its tightest now with any aspect of forces related especially……I hope that he has the best time, I know he will…this is so his type of camp experience, isn’t it…

I’m sure he will be fine. I completely understand the fear though. It’s sad how many people don’t realise how many threats there are out there. To attack a soldier though… there should be longer sentences for people who hurt/kill service members

just waiting for the "can’t determine” the motive of the attack" line

Oh and going by the pic I doubt the name will get released for quite some time..

GoldHeart 24-07-2024 01:04 PM

Targeting a soldier has to be terror & deliberate , this was no ' randon mental health outburst ' . So I agree they need to stop using that as a default setting.

'licking the victim's blood' ...wtf :umm2: .

Cherie 24-07-2024 01:50 PM

A neighbour said the soldier left his house at the same time every evening, the attacker arrived on a moped and had a ski mask on...sounds targetted to me, but the line of enquiry is mental health
