Labours new plan to Turbo Build new homes

https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cp...94e04.jpg.webp

[Labour have placed planning reforms
at the heart of their mission to drive
economic growth,
pledging to get Britain building.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has
repeatedly promised his government
will be “builders, not blockers”.
The new Planning and Infrastructure Bill,
announced on Wednesday,
will "turbocharge building of houses
and infrastructure",
the government said.

But experts have warned that
despite the proposed changes,
it will be "extremely easy" to
derail housebuilding,
if not infrastructure,
through local planning objections.

Government statistics suggest the
current system for approving
new homes is in a quagmire.

Local planning authorities meet
deadlines for minor applications in
only 10% of cases, and only 1% handle major
applications within the legal 13-week time limit.

Labour campaigned on a pledge to
build 1.5 million homes in five years
by streamlining planning and fast-tracking
major infrastructure projects.]

Fast Tracking what with
Cowboy Builders?

"Turbo-build" just makes me think subsidence and burst pipes :joker:.

However, we are desperately in need of new, good quality social housing in this country. The "housing allowance" scheme shelling out insane amounts of money to private landlords is a shambles for a multitude of reasons.

I am a bit concerned that it was said new housing stock did not have to be 'beautiful' when you look at fantastic housing from the past and now look at the bog standard plain boxes with small rooms and tiny gardens in new estates

'Beautiful' has there been any thing built recently that is ? Mostly ugly little boxes like you say Cherie. So are they gonna be even worse now ?

They have got to be that bad that you wouldnt home the homeless in them, so I guess so! I mean, why else wouldnt the "caring MPs" of the past 12 years not do so once in power.

With 3,000 migrants coming into the country in last 21 days I know who'll be front of the queue to get these new houses and it won't be Brits. My uncle is 67 and has been on the housing list for 10 years. In that time he's seen migrants come before him.

Labour won't have the locals in mind. They will want to give new homes to migrants.

It's quite frankly sickening.

I wonder how long it will be before we see groups of protesters or vigilantes manning our beaches ?

I'd make them build them before punting them off back from whence they came, gusto. Your uncle would get the first one available.

New builds all look like crap, and are generally crappily made. Are they really worth losing our green spaces for?

It will take a year to get plans in.

Yes they have priority. Living in luxury, no wonder they all want to come here .

In general they will always prioritise families with children over single adults (immigrants or otherwise) and I think generally the reasons for that are good & obvious -- however it is quite shocking that they wouldn't prioritise housing for someone at 67. I would have thought over-60's should also be considered a priority.

Beso 31-07-2024 10:32 AM

231 thousand new homes were built last year, labour's new plans have seen their yearly target drop to 200 thousand..
