Taylor Swift Vienna concerts cancelled after attack threat

Three upcoming Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna have been cancelled following a possible security threat.

The shows had been due to take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the Ernst Happel Stadium.

On Wednesday, two people were arrested on suspicion of planning Islamist attacks on large events in the area around the Austrian capital.

A statement from the organisers said: "Due to confirmation by government officials of a planned terrorist attack at the Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three planned shows for everyone's safety."

The statement added: "All tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 working days."

Earlier, Austria’s General Director for Public Security, Franz Ruf, said a 19-year-old Austrian citizen was arrested on Wednesday morning in Ternitz in the province of Lower Austria.

He said a second arrest took place in Vienna in the afternoon, but gave no further details about the suspect.

“According to the current status of the investigation, the two suspects became radicalised via the internet,” Mr Ruf said.

He said the 19-year-old made “an oath of allegiance” to so-called Islamic State at the beginning of July.

A large police operation took place in Ternitz, where the 19-year-old lived. A number of houses nearby were evacuated while his home was searched.

Mr Ruf said chemical substances had been found and were being examined.

The head of police in Vienna, Gerhard Pürstl, said 65,000 people per day had been expected to attend the concerts, as well as 22,000 fans outside the venue.

Investigations are continuing.

That is bad news for her Austrian fans but safety first

Beso 07-08-2024 10:25 PM

Sounds familiar.

If only our police were as vigilant.

Mystic Mock 07-08-2024 10:35 PM

Well at least they were able to put a stop to the attack.

Beso 07-08-2024 10:43 PM

It's kind of all making sense now to me.

Impressionable kids are being radicalised online by terrorists to target any popular Americans shows concerts, or events.

Our one, being inept but willing chose the easiest target his simple mind could handle.

That's where I'm at with that story.

Tomorrows a better day.

I don't think there's a link just a coincidence that it's Taylor swift music again.

But I really hope this isn't the wave of more terrorism again, they were smart to cancel for safety reasons though.

Wow I didn’t even put that together

I wonder if the dude who killed the girls in the UK is linked to this kind of radicalisation. As far as I’m aware, they still haven’t released his motive have they?

The only connection between Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande is that it's pop aimed at young girls. Connecting the Southport event with this, or either with Manchester, is a bit of a reach.

They are both female megastars who will get the attackers a lot of publicity/ media attention

Its pointless targeting some singer or group that has a small following/audience

They are both performers where the majority of their audience are young girls

Mystic Mock 08-08-2024 09:09 PM

We can't rule out the Southport killer might've been an Incel.

Because he went on a rampage in a similar way to Jake Davison and Elliot Rodger.

I think he could be, he didnt turn up at a Taylor Swift dance class by accident

Yeah it was a specific targeted attack .

I guess we'll keep speculating ..... might never find out .

Ninastar 08-08-2024 10:06 PM

I just read that the attackers were hired as security guards… genuinely terrifying

If we can’t trust the government to hire non radicalised secret guards… we are ****ed

I don’t think people realise how scary this is

It is terrifying & scary , hopefully this is a wake up call for them. It doesn't bear thinking about. If there's one thing that's worse than this , it's when people get to the stage where they're too frightened to trust anyone.....and end up becoming a recluse out of fear of what might happen out there ,but people have to live their lives and not let it destroy them:shrug: .
