The host city for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 has been chosen as Switzerland prepare to welcome Eurovision next year.

Following singer Nemo's victory earlier this year with The Code at Malmö, Sweden, it was confirmed that Eurovision would indeed be heading to Switzerland next year.

Now, it's been confirmed that the Swiss host city will be Basel, the country's third-largest city.

Eurovision itself will take place in St. Jacobshalle, an area just outside of Basel, with a capacity of 12,400.

Timings have also been confirmed in terms of the two 2025 semi-finals and the Grand Final itself.

The two Eurovision 2025 semi-finals will take place on Tuesday 13 May and Thursday 15 May 2025, with the Grand Final on Saturday May 17.

“The EBU is thrilled that Basel has been selected as the Host City for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. The Contest was born in Switzerland in Lugano back in 1956 and it’s great to be bringing it back to its birthplace almost 70 years later,” said Martin Österdahl, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest.

“Basel's strategic location at the crossroads of Europe makes it the ideal setting for an event that celebrates the power of music to connect people across borders,” Österdahl continued. “Following Contests in the Italian and French speaking parts of the country in 1956 and 1989 we’re also excited to bring the Eurovision Song Contest to German Switzerland for the very first time.”

Switzerland's victory with Nemo in 2024 was the third time the country won Eurovision; Switzerland were actually the winners of the first ever Eurovision in 1956 with Lys Assia's Refrain and again in 1988 with none other than Celine Dion (!) with Ne partez pas sans moi.

Semi-final 1: 13 May 2025

Semi-final 2: 15 May 2025

Grand Final: 17 May 2025

If no changes happen, Albania will certainly be one of the first countries to
select its candidate via a national selection. Festivali i Këngës usually happens
by the end of December. Luxembourg should be the next one to hold a
televised event that should happen in January.

Spain's Benidorm Fest will take place on 28, 30 January with its final scheduled
for 1 February. Italy, another country of the Big-5, will hold its long Sanremo
nights from 11 to 15 February. It will also be on 15 February that Lithuania will
pick its representative through Eurovizija.LT 2025. A week later, it will be San
Marino's turn with Una Voce per San Marino 2025.

Portugal
should start its search by the end of February and wrap it in March as
well as Denmark that will select its candidate on 1 March. Both countries will
stick with their national selections: Festival da Canção and Dansk Melodi Grand
Prix.

Got you a top ten finish.

I was hoping Liechtenstein would make it for 2025 but looks very unlikely now. :(

Not as good as our Jedward though, also she was a disgrace the way she carried on about the Israeli performer, whatever your opinions are on that conflict, it's not the fault of that 20 year old

It was tragic by a nasty little oik lady with no class

Surely Ireland can find better people to represent them than that mess?

Jedward are trash. I honestly hated them so much.

Niamh. 02-09-2024 03:34 PM

If there wasn't an age limit, would love these kids from Cork representing us

Benjamin 02-09-2024 03:35 PM

I’m hoping the UK sends something decent this year. We love to send generic, forgettable people (Sam Ryder the rare exception).

Get this Cork farmer on with "come out you Black and Tans"

https://www.irishtimes.com/resizer/v...800&height=800

Could change it to "come out if black and trans" so to play more to the ESC audience?
