Labour Budget : Rachel Reeves Wednesday 12:30PM 30/OCT/24

Chancellor to change debt rules to release Billions

[The government will change its
self-imposed debt rules in order to free
up billions for infrastructure spending,
the chancellor has told the BBC.
Rachel Reeves said that she would make
a technical change to the way debt is
measured which will allow it to fund
extra investment.

She said this was being done "so that we can
grow our economy and bring jobs and
growth to Britain".
However, Reeves' first Budget next week
is still expected to mean some cuts to
public services and tax rises.
The government has committed to get debt
falling as share of the economy
during the course of this Parliament,
rather than over a rolling five-year period.

But the wider debt measure is expected
to allow for up to £50bn more borrowing
for investment, although not all of this
is expected to be allocated at the Budget.
"We will be changing the measure of debt,"
Reeves told the BBC, adding that she will
set out the details of that on 30 October.]

BBC News Text:
[The build-up to next week's budget continues
to lead many of the papers.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed plans to
change how the government defines
its assets in a way that will allow
it to borrow around £20bn more per year
to fund investment, the Financial Times reports.
Writing in the paper,
Reeves says the change will ensure
Britain avoids "the falls in public sector
investment that were planned under
the last government".]

It isn't going to be a nice event for sure.

However I'll not follow the media, I'll wait and see what actually is the overall gains/ losses from it and where the emphasis will be of any positives of it as to investment.

However I don't think I'm going to be much of an admirer of Ms Reeves at all.
Then again over my time of understanding politics, I've never liked any Chancellor.
I don't think any Prime Ministers have really liked their chancellors either.

Livia 26-10-2024 11:49 AM

What is it about Rachel Reeves? She looks like a person without a soul. Dead voice, dead behind the eyes.

Cherie 26-10-2024 11:52 AM

Talk about tying yourself in knots, so working people are people who have nothing left at the end of the month? the most bizarre thing I have ever heard

Livia 26-10-2024 12:01 PM

Who'd have thought we'd be in a time when the Labour party couldn't adequately describe the working class? I mean, I knew they'd struggled with what a woman is, but....

bots 26-10-2024 01:40 PM

if i thought it was going to be some genius strategy that breaks us out of decades of stagnation i would at least wait and see what happens. However, we all know this is just going to be another nightmare for ordinary people

Maybe she'll reverse the pensioners winter fuel theft. ;)

Rachel Thieves.

joeysteele 28-10-2024 08:25 AM

I agree with her aims.

However NOT as to how she may be planning to reach them in this first budget.
What she ' seems ' to be going to do is a long way from what was expected, as being necessary and from all the briefings from her sources to the Party activists.

Obviously I will wait as I said earlier, to see the detail and weigh up the positives against negatives.
However I am incredibly disappointed with the government so far on its economy decisions.thst seem to be forthcoming.
She's going about it in the wrong way targeting the wrong people too.

I get the feeling, I'll be moaning a lot at the government in its first year or so from my own disillusionment and anger at what we were led to believe during the election campaign.

I fear Ms Reeves is more like a very cold individual who just refuses to listen.
Something that was stressed would be one of the main elements of this government, a government of service that LISTENS.
Doesn't look that way at all with Ms Reeves as Chancellor very sadly.

[Bus fares to rise to £3 in England
under new cap

The bus fare cap in England will be raised to £3
in the upcoming Budget, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer
has announced.
It is an increase on the current limit of £2 which
was introduced under the previous
Conservative government to help
with the cost of living.
The existing cap was due to expire at
the end of December.

Sir Keir said: "I do know how much this matters,
particularly in rural communities where
there is heavy reliance on buses."
The new £3 cap, covering most bus journeys
in England, will run until the end of 2025.
About 3.4 million people in England use buses.
There had been speculation in recent days
that the chancellor would announce
in the Budget on Wednesday that
the current cap would be scrapped.
This would have meant that some passengers
faced a steep hike in fares following
two years of help.
Bus fares in London with Transport for London will,
however, remain at £1.75 and those
in Greater Manchester at £2.

They are excluded from the broader fare
cap as their funding is structured differently.]
