I actually think the best thing to do is watch many different news platforms and see how they portray everything and then think for yourself

It’s quite eye opening

It’s actually rather interesting comparing the different news outputs

Say there’s a mass shooting or a tsunami the same channels will always exaggerate the numbers involved or the price paid for a footballer

I just listen to the news anywhere really. But I never take it in as truth.

I often end up thinking, 'that's a load of rubbish, total lie'.

Currently there's no other way to make any sense whatsoever of what's going on in the world. You have to be aware of the numerous angles, and their numerous brands of propaganda.

Who do you trust more for news and information?
 

I have noticed that all our age group and above ( 55+) all seem quite level headed whilst the younger ones ( under 35) seem to be worrying about everything and believe some of the wildest stories or conspiracy theories ..

I dont trust any media outlets

Older people have more grounding in news pre-social media so they don't absorb news the same way as those who have only known news that included internet generated fodder. It doesn't mean older people can't be fooled, but their instincts of what is real and what is false are stronger. It's much more difficult to guard against state generated news that is propaganda, when bombarded with enough of it, it's almost impossible for reality to break through


A good rule of thumb is that if you are constantly reading stuff that makes you angry after 1 or 2 paragraphs, you are reading the wrong news sources

Good lord, 5+ years ago you might have had something close to a point there, but this is an absolutely wild claim in 2024. And on TiBB of all places :skull:.

If anything I think the older generations are far more susceptible to wild manipulations and going down daft, conspiracy-laden rabbit holes - it's like shooting fish in a barrel for the likes of Trump and Musk, they have that demographic eating out of the palm of their grubby hands and lapping up absolutely anything that goes out on "alternative media".

My criticism of the younger generations would actually not be that - it would be that they are full of blinkered naval-gazing and idealism and simply immediately reject counter-arguments that are grounded and pragmatic. They have an awful lot of things that they want "stopped", and little inclination to offer any realistic alternative. It seems not to matter. They'll get frustrated and angry simply because they've been asked to think about anything beyond "pointing out the bad things and getting loud about it". Which I find odd.

I disagree, I think people who grew up not having heard of the concept of "fake news" are far more likely to fall for fake news. It's just a different brand of fake news.

I actually think the much more recent generations (today's teenagers and kids) are showing signs of being far less likely to fall for media manipulation; they've grown up immersed in it and their IMMEDIATE response, on hearing anything at all online, is to assume that it's BS. They've spent their whole lives seeing things online that turned out to be BS. So this was an inevitable mechanism and it'll be interesting to see how that pans out for "tomorrow's adults".

So why are so many young people so easily convinced by conspiracy theories. ??

Flat earthers, Trump truthers, etc. are generally 35+ not young. Look at this forum for one, with all the middle age+ blokes banging on about "MSM kool aid". They're one step away from trying to convince you that the moon is a hologram.

We should all tune in to ToySoldier/SoldierBoy/QuantumBoy... he has the answer to any question with never a moment's doubt.

I find it endlessly fascinating that you take such issue with people having an opinion on a debate forum, and take it so personally when that opinion differs wildly from your own.

I wonder who that suggests thinks they are always right :think:. I don't mind that you think differently to me Livia, I know you disagree with me and that's OK ... but you seem to really struggle with the idea that I hear your/your cronies opinions and disagree with them :think:. Why is that?
