I guess the thing is all the other powers are distracted right now - Russia with Ukraine, Iran with Israel, the US is a lame duck. I expect there's some significant support from some of the Gulf monarchies playing a role here

i would say it's likely ISIS rebadged as rebels, so there are likely 10's of thousands of them
