Old school teas/dinners

Finsters crispy pancakes in the Top Answers has got me nostalgic for those old school teas that you'd have when you/your parents couldn't be arsed to cook. I used to love the chicken and bacon ones, not even sure if they're still around

Chicago town deep dish pizzas is another along with a load of oven chips or potato waffles

Fish fingers is a classic as well of course but I basically never eat them these days. Might have to get some in even just to have as lunches in a sandwich

Cheese flan at primary school. Can’t say I’ve ever had flan again since.

Mince and tatties (with garden peas) was my old mums go to back in the day. Friday nights was the chippy, Haggis supper or special Fish (haddock in breadcrumbs) all wrapped in newspaper and washed down with a big glass bottle of Irn Bru

Oh also Angel Delight was such a treat for pudding. Must be over 20 years since I've had that :o

I’m sure nearly every 90s child got 90 degree burns on their tongue, mouth and chin from these.

I tried to make a butterscotch one a few months back but with oat milk. Sadly it doesn’t set with oat milk :(

It's kinda strange that the only other time anyone in the UK would eat turkey was in that processed drumstick form

Why did they use turkey and not chicken for those

I just bought 10 tins.

My mother will be so happy and so will me and my dad. We’ve not had a fruit flan for a year because my mum couldn’t find the damn cream.

Thank you LT

…it was the time and rise of ‘fast’ food, wasn’t it…like the Angel Delights and Dream Topping…desserts that could be made in moments…it was the death of the potato time as well…(…forgive me, Niamh…please look away….)…with frozen Waffles and Smileys and Alphabet potatoes so that you could play word games with your meal…we did have quiche and salad as well and that was thought of as a healthier option, even with the pastry…I also recall little square bits of fish which were boiled in the bag in a parsley sauce and they looked pretty awful but actually didn’t taste too shabby if I recall….

How do you ‘cook’ your potato waffles incidental ??

I put them in the toaster .. two or three times ..
then fry for a minute in hot lard / beef dripping to add some flavour ..

Zizu 19-12-2024 08:47 AM

Absolutely love Angel Delight although it plays havoc with my sinuses !!
