Marge Simpson’s voice

What are we saying, lads and ladettes, re. the progressive croak and raspiness of Marge Simpson’s voice by the season? Do you think the voice-actor should have retired if it wasn’t for the money or has she still got *it*?

Exhibit-A, for what it’s worth: https://youtube.com/shorts/KRti1xYMj...HzGvdExx_6dhzO

I just think the whole show should have ended back in the eary 2000s.

Not a controversial opinion, I know.

Not much of a fan of the Scully era, then?

Something definitely changed after season 12 but it’s still a good show as far as I’m concerned. But Julie Kavner’s ever-increasing huskiness and the way it’s flanderised Marge’s voice is definitely something of a distractor this side of season 12. It does sound kinda painful at this point, I’m not even going to lie.

If I weren't, I'd have said the show should have ended in the mid-nineties, before he became the showrunner. I'm admittedly a bit vague and blurry on exactly when The Simpsons becomes stale for me, but I think I can confidently say that the Scully years still had some juice left in them and were chock-full of laughs for me personally. Guess Who's Coming to Criticise Dinner is in the running for my favourite episode.

Seasons 3 to 8 are obviously GOATed but they’re also of its time in a way that’s technically kinda ageless (after-all, this show’s predicted a lot of things that ended up happening) but kind of isn’t. To the latter type of person, season 9 is when The Simpsons become modern in the way that they will like it.

I still love it. One of my favorite shows.

GoldHeart 06-03-2025 02:36 PM

Why is this mostly about Marge ?, surely the whole show is milked to death now . And regardless of croaky voice or not , it is insanely difficult to do voice over for several characters at a time, whilst making sure you give each character their own personality & unique tone . Homer & Bart's Voices do about 10 characters each or something.

The actress who does the voice of Bart Simpson explained in a documentary BTS ,that when the director/ producer keeps telling them to repeat a line " one more time" for a recording, she said it is never just one more time .

Imagine being in a booth saying for e.g " eat my shorts" a million times or something. No wonder all the actors wanted a pay rise at one point ,must have been tiring & way too repetitive.

I noticed her voice getting worst this season. She needs to retire as it’s not doing good for her own voice

But who would replace her?

Crimson Dynamo 06-03-2025 04:56 PM

I know there are quite a few people that have said Coleen Nolan has been doing the voice since 2021

That would make sense

No idea. Like what if one of the main voice actors quit? Do they just finish the show or do they recast? It’s a tough one to say

Didn’t they kill off Mrs (Edna) Krabappel when her voice-actress died? Or did she just move out of town (which obviously isn’t an option for a character as major as Marge)? I can’t remember.

No I think she was killed off off screen when the actress died. With Marge being one of the main candidates they afford to kill her off if the actress quit due to her voice?

No, either Marge remains alive or the show ends. They can’t lose a character like Marge.

Nah. Love you, Marge, but this just doesn’t sound right. It’s giving throat cancer.

user104658 07-03-2025 06:52 AM

What the heck. As someone who hasn't watched The Simpsons in 10-15 years (new episodes anyway) - that's sounds NOTHING like Marge or how I remember her voice anyway.

MTVN 07-03-2025 07:34 AM

Yeah that voice is on its last legs

The change in actors voices for long running shows is something I never fully appreciated till recently. I was really excited for Futurama returning a couple of years ago but then I found the changes in actors voices (particularly Fry) so off-putting that I struggled to enjoy it

Aw man that is some awful ****.

Getting paid $2-300k per episode she voices is surely a big-enough incentive not to retire and that’s fine, and ultimately her choice, but she sounds ill at this point, which Patty and Selma even at 2 packs a day in cigarettes don’t. Time for her to get throat-surgery or something even if she doesn’t want to retire.

The Simpsons, My Wife and Kids and EastEnders are among my all-time favourite shows and I adore Marge and Lisa (they’re probably my all-time favourite characters) but the state of Marge’s voice now is really giving me concern about the future of her character if Kavner doesn’t do something about it. I know what it’s like to have a voice that sounds a bit unnaturally deep, low or husky over the course of many, many years and being generally very self-conscious about it, telling people you have throat nodules/polyps (the benign equivalent to throat-cancer) just so you have a reason for sounding so husky and they don’t question how you might be ill in some other way (like a terribly sore throat), so unlike perhaps the average viewer I can relate to Kavner. She absolutely does need to do something about it. She’s obviously minted but health is wealth, too.

She still sounds like Marge to me but yeah. It gets worse every season so if they reach 40 seasons (it’s on 36 just now), she might not have any voice left at-all.

Nothing's ever going to beat Andrew Lincoln completely forgetting how he did his Walking Dead "Rick accent" between leaving the show and coming back for the standalone sequel thing. It wasn't a great accent to begin with but it was very distinct and .... he did not manage to recapture it. At all.

And on top of that, Dr Hibbert was successfully … modified. With a bit of technology they could probably tone down Marge’s hoarseness while still keeping Kavner in the role. I’m not such an AI-friendly person but it definitely has its uses in technology.

Its jarring but I would rather the voice actress remain in the role.

That’s kinda how I feel. Just that they should find a technological way to polish it up.
