A Deadly American Marriage

@Niamh. have you watched this, the family involved were Irish and its a very recent case

by the end of it I found it really hard to know who to believe

Spoiler:

at first I thought she and her Dad definately murdered him, but then she had these recordings which really did not put Jason in a very good light

Niamh. 19-05-2025 12:15 PM

Yes, myself and Ammi had a discussion about it in the Last film you watched thread.

Spoiler:

I remember the case from when it happened, it was huge news here at the time. I absolutely believe that they murdered Jason. That recording of Jason to me sounded like a guy on the brink, frustrated and annoyed. Apparently, she'd been trying to alienate those kids from him, she'd tell him wrong times for doctor appointments and matches the kids played etc. I mean, she had recording devices all around that house and that recording was the most damning example of him being abusive?

And don't even get me started on the father and his implications that Jason killed his first wife. Literally no one thought that, not the medical professionals who dealt with her or did her autopsy and not Mags family, that was a barefaced lie made up by Tom. And his leaning into the drunk thick Irish stereotypes ugh. I could rant on forever about this one lol

Oh right never go into that thread unless I have watched a film  yeah there were alot of discrepancies for sure, I think Jack in particular is very damaged by it all, Molly being a bit younger seems a bit stronger

Sarah you mean?

Not sure if you read any of the posts in that thread but I think this is a really good indicator of which of the two was the abusive one in the relationship (bear in mind this ex of Mollys wrote the book/his memoir 3 years before Molly and Tom killed Jason

Yeah, if she was doing all that to him, imo he sounded really restrained.

I also read about her ex boyfriend who 3 years before the murder happened had actually written a book about his relationship with Molly and the abuse and mental health issues she had. He says they were still a couple when Moly went to Ireland initially

I haven't seen it but without even seeing it would caution that 99.9% of anything that mentions "parental alienation" stuff is men's rights propaganda and utter garbage.

Will give it a peek though.

You really should watch it before you comment though, they weren't separated

Also, to add I'm not sure if they even used that term in the documentary, that could just be my wording of what was going on

Sorry yes I meant Sarah, she seems a little more unscathed than Jack

…interestingly, this was something that Sarah said much later in an interview…

For years, Molly’s behaviour had a detrimental effect on Sarah’s relationship with her brother. ‘She pitted us against each other, one day it was me who was the best in the world, the next day it was Jack, to the point we didn’t like being around each other,’ she explains. ‘We’d get punished for doing nothing and sometimes if I got into trouble, she’d take it out on Jack physically and tell him it was because I had done something. You can’t have a relationship with your sibling in those circumstances.’

…I do t think that she was more unscathed by any of it, I think it’s probably for me, more that they were both so young at the time through their whole experience of Molly in their lives etc and what led up to the brutal killing of their father…that it’s taken them differing times and ways of processing it all etc…that’s been their own individual journeys and two year age difference at that time in their lives with their awarenesses etc was quite huge…

Ammi 20-05-2025 06:48 AM

…thinking back on the story more now with more distance…I do feel that the ‘self defence’ and second degree murder were both totally ridiculous/misguided/mistaken and generally what the heck…!!!!…for someone who just happened to have a huge brick/rock on her dressing table on the night that she had her father staying and when Jason was seriously looking at taking the children back to Ireland and away from Molly’s influence…an influence that seemed very divisive and controlling…

Yeah plus that sleeping tablet found in his system tells me that he was either drugged preemptively to subdue him later as he was a big man or he took it himself which would imply he was planning on going to bed to sleep

What I mean by unscathed, is that she just seems mentally stronger than Jack, when they were travelling to the second trial and they played Jasons favourite song, Jack was in bits but Sarah just stared out the window, she has written a book now as well about her experience which will be somewhat cathartic

…yeah I don’t know…it’s always difficult with emotional damage that is seen more and able to release and the emotional damage that can be trapped inside …it’s hard to say but what I do feel is that they’re now both equally surrounded by love and support with their family and that gives them a foundation and path of healing that is incredibly valuable…

I had it on in the background as I was working and I stopped it on this unfortunate frame to do something else

That's it, that's my contribution to the thread. I haven't followed enough to add on :D

Niamh. 28-05-2025 08:01 AM

@Quantum Boy did you ever watch this, I was interested in what you thought?

Ammi 28-05-2025 08:06 AM

…Molly’s parole period ends on June 6th this year…so in a few days, she’ll be living with no restrictions from it all…

…yeah it’s absolutely nothing and I do feel that Tom being ex FBI and being so familiar with the system plus possibly having connections may have had some substantial weight, the more I think of it…

I don't doubt that for a second.
