All Babies to have a DNA tests to check of good health
[All babies could have their DNA mapped
to test for future illnesses under a plan unveiled by the government, it has been reported. Labour is set to pour £650m into DNA technology in an effort to treat serious illnesses before they become a problem.] [Every newborn baby in the UK will have a DNA screening as part of an NHS 'revolution' to battle killer diseases. The health secretary Wes Streeting said new technology in areas such as genomics would help 'leapfrog' illnesses. The Government is set to pour £650 million into DNA technology in an effort to treat serious illnesses before they become a problem.] https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...evolution.html Yes, it makes some sense to do. https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/i...70baaf3ba3.jpg |
Hmmm... Sounds like something that starts with good intentions then descends into the sinister. Maybe they could tattoo bar codes on them too so we know who's who.

Do not give them ideas |
This is a very bad idea. They are going to do treatments for things they might never get? Or give medication unnecessarily? No no no.
|
I am sure the NHS will be a safe and secure guardian for all the DNA samples
what with their up-to-date software etc :skull: |
Need to hear more about it but it seems to make sense and be a worthwhile project.
|
Imagine being more afraid of a genome map than a child dying from a preventable illness. People’s priorities are ****ed.

So it wouldn't surprise me. |

Back on topic...why put them through screening then even when it's only a what if? Or putting them on medication as a preventative when they might never need it, eg if heart disease is in their DNA. I don't agree with it. And don't tell me in a patronising fashion to calm down. Watch how you speak to people, it's damm rude. I was perfectly calm and reasoned in my post. You calm down instead. |

And screening? It’s about knowing, not forcing treatments. Information doesn’t ‘traumatise’ a child, but ignorance sure can. Not that I expect you to comprehend the difference. Anyway, you stay ‘calm and reasoned’ over there. The rest of us will stick with common sense and leave the pearl‑clutching to you. |

I was talking about Livia's hypothetical future where babies have trackers implanted into them from birth, it honestly wouldn't surprise me if society went down that path. |

down the road anything can change |
I am personally 50/50 on this. On a very surface level, it seems like a good thing:
It's important to consider that they will only be looking for conditions that: - are reliably detectable, - would impact quality of life if left undetected, - have proven improved outcome when intervention has been put in place before symptoms show - have treatment available. However this isn't perfect - on a totally basic level, this could effect things like travel insurance from birth, even if the symptoms aren;'t showing and could not effect someone for decades to come. There is also the very real threat of data-selling, potentially. It would need to have an incredibly tight security around it. Having said all that, I would be lying if I said I trusted any Government at all, and particularly with health issues. There was something extremely weird about the way in which governments manufactured and manipulated the fear and control during covid pandemic which will forever make me look at them suspiciously. |
am i the only one that is alarmed that this is announced at the same time as assisted dying passes in the commons?
|
i can see a future where today's children are forced to accept treatment or they will lose future benefits, and that is just one thought. With the advances in AI, future generations are going to be targeted based on their genetics in all sorts of ways. Take it to its logical end point and it is like nazi's generating the super race.
Can people really sit here and say they trust the government and corporations and the wealthy to look after the publics interests |
…it feels very much like a ‘Big Brother’ type thing and it would be lovely to think that it’s all for good reasons and for the good of the people etc…but recent governments sadly have a leaning to act in their own interest/…not the interest of the people…more and more their actions are feeling like ‘control’ rather than care…it should feel quite positive bu it doesn’t for me, it feels quite scary…

"it feels quite scary…"
Of course Ammi it has the power of life or death. |
