Weird eBay sellers tell you to keep products

So I bought an Android TV box last week for £45.00 on eBay. Brand new.

Anyway it was delivered but the remote control had one of the volume buttons missing. A sort of rubber button that is pushed in and can fall out.

Luckily I don't use the android box remote volume buttons. So it didn't matter really. I use the TV volume instead.

Everything else was fully working.

Anyway I thought I'd send a message to the seller just to tell him what happened.

About 3am I got a reply that said 'customer dear, we apologise for your inconvenience and express our sincere regret you had troubles. Please accept a full refund. £45.00 will be paid into your account. You don't have to return any of our products. Please dispose of it. Sincerely.

What the... I never even asked for a refund.

Weird.

Chinese companies often do that, they're very courteous and crawlie with their language, and give refunds for everything.

Ah, is that what it is. Thought they were Chinese sellers. So hard to return to China. Buy why so eager to give a full refund when I never asked for one.

This happens on Amazon US also with Chinese sellers. But... this practice occurs widely in retail as well, just behind the scenes. When consumer goods are taken as a return, if it can't go back immediately out to the floor as open box (the item has some issue or too incomplete), then it is put on a pallet where Receiving has to sift through and mark returns for a trip to the DC (distribution center). In the system, they check if it's RMA (RTM/return to manufacturer), goes back to the DC to live on a pallet (for auction possibly) or goes into the trash. The bigger shops have a trash compactor for this purpose. Those items don't end up on a pallet, they go straight to the local landfill. More returns go straight into the trash than people realize especially electronic items because they're non-repairable. Other reasons might be items that have been worn by people, such as Earbuds/bluetooth earpieces etc, can't be resold so they are often simply trashed.
