UK porn sites that have publicly agreed to age checks from Friday July 25, 2025

(This is not an exhaustive list
of all the sites that have to comply;
others are not happy
to be named at this stage)

[Britain's porn crackdown: Ofcom reveals the
full list of adult sites you'll have to prove
you're over-18 to access from next month
Ofcom said these 13 sites 'are happy to be
named at this stage' and 'represent a broad
range of pornography services accessed in the UK'.

But other porn sites not on the list,
such as XHamster and XVideos,
have to comply with the rule too.

If any fails to do so,
Ofcom can impose fines and
in very serious cases apply for a court order
to prevent the site or app from
being available.]

[According to Oliver Griffiths,
Ofcom's group director of online safety,
making life safer online 'is one of
the defining challenges of our era'.
'Society has long protected youngsters from
products that aren't suitable for them,
from alcohol to smoking or gambling,' he said.

'But for too long children have been
only a click away from harmful pornography online.

'Now, change is happening.
These age checks will bring pornography
into line with how we treat adult services
in the real world, without compromising access
and privacy for over-18s.'

In terms of how the age checks would work,
Ofcom has already listed seven methods
that porn providers could use.
Ultimately, which one they opt for is their
decision, not Ofcom's, but their chosen
method must be ‘highly effective’
at correctly determining if a user is under 18.

Ofcom's seven suggested strategies
are photo-ID matching, facial age estimation,
mobile-network operator (MNO) age checks,
credit card checks, email-based age estimation,
digital identity services and open banking.

Open banking works by accessing the
information a bank has on record regarding
a user's age, while photo-ID matching involves
uploading a verified photo-ID document,
like a PDF of a passport or driving licence.]

The problem with this, is if children are able to access an older family member's details just so they can get on the Porn Site.

Yes, one of the many future problems.

I think the idea is to make it as awkward/difficult as possible that minors won't bother going to the hassle and therefore it'll cut down the amount of underage people consuming porn, which is only a good thing.

I believe there are three ways to verify age: through producing a photo ID, running a credit card check or doing a 'face scan' which estimates someone's age. The first and the last will be highly effective in blocking youngsters from accessing porn, and I believe the majority of teenagers won't want to input their parents credit card details for fear of them being charged or notified, so I do think this will be effective.

I'm all for it - porn is extremely damaging - it creates super unrealistic expectations around what real sex is like, and particularly for guys, it can feed into really ugly attitudes towards how to treat women particularly in the bedroom.

I guess I have a little concern it feels bit...authoritarian/big brother-y, however I think it's worth it from a safety perspective and the benefits of reducing porn consumption from a young age overrides the worry of it being a bit of a power overreach.

There is also the very legitimate issue of it pushing people to access sites who are flouting the rules that are riddled with virus' etc... and potentially hosting worse material than on sites such as PornHub - I think they need to really police these sites if they want this new bill to be safe and effective, but I'm not sure how possible that is?

arista 13-07-2025 09:41 AM

Yes BBXX
great points,
I think some more changes could also be added
Also Monday would be a good start day
not a Friday?

BBXX 13-07-2025 09:44 AM

Yeah let people finish the week off with a bit of porn and start afresh on Monday, like people do either diets  I agree!

Personally it won't effect me because I don't look at those sites, but there is also a major privacy risk around those adults who do provide their details - providing a photo ID that is then leaked and connected to sites to do with porn is a very risky threat. I think the intention is good, but it's quite a flawed idea the more I think about it...

Vicky. 13-07-2025 09:47 AM

Can't believe this wasn't already the case tbh

Livia 13-07-2025 09:51 AM

Are you over 18 yes/no.

Makes me feel my kids are being protected.

I does feel wild that porn is so easily accessible to minors, especially when you compare it to age verification around alcohol for example - even if you buy a bottle of something online the delivery driver has to see a form of ID before handing it over.

bots 13-07-2025 11:07 AM

it would take 30 seconds to bypass the check

Agreed the normalisation of porn has been very damaging imo so the more hoops that people have to jump through to access it the better

Boys in particular are accessing this stuff at such a young age that they think this is what happens in normal relationships, its criminal that its taken so long to just think about making it more inaccessible

I’m so sure they tried the age thing years ago too, maybe I’m wrong but I remember sites saying you needed ID to access it

bots 13-07-2025 12:27 PM

i don't quite see what this is meant to achieve when impressionable kids are subjected to all sorts of crap in their normal daily lives that has zero age verification. No point worrying about all of that though, it's the porn that's bad

VPN I think you mean. I don’t know what they can do to keep kids safe on the net, maybe a ban on internet for under 15s? But how would that work

I’d be amazed if they had all those things ( and worse ) on the dark web … but not pornography

Why is it called the dark web? Also how do people find it? It’s scary

i've never been on it, the concept of actively searching out something that is inherently evil doesn't appeal to me. I believe there are special browsers to access the dark web. It's called the dark web because everything is basically illegal thats on it

Well if all the kids / teenagers know how to access the dark web and it’s worse than the internet then it makes this registry thing pointless ..

that's my basic point. Restricting access to things that are relatively harmless just points kids at things that are a lot more dangerous that aren't subject to rules
