Solo Travelling

Has anyone ever gone on holiday on their own? I've done this a couple of times, and really enjoy it - it's nice being on your own time and making all the choices.

I love a holiday with my family and friends, too, but I've found it really lovely to just be on your own plan for some trips.

I've done both New York and Berlin, both incredible cities. I'm a proper city explorer so I usually choose a city as I think it feels less inconspicuous if you're on your own in a city - so many people are.

I wondered what other peoples' experiences were with solo travel and if there are any cities/places you've been you thought were ideal for it?

Love it! Don’t have to argue with anyone about what to eat/where to go etc

Redway 17-07-2025 07:16 PM

Solo travelling is a natural forte of introverts (who tend to be more comfortable on their own than in groups).

I've done it in my earlier years but I prefer company now. Was great at the time.

Yaaah! Choosing where to eat is the best, even though my husband and I are really in tune with one another when it comes to that as we both like pretty much everything, however it's nice not to have the "where do you wanna go" "I don't mind what about you" and then when it's your choice feeling the pressure incase it's ****

Also we have a few different ideas for what we want to go on holiday so make a really effort to ensure we're splitting chose activities/locations etc 50/50 and it works, but again it's nice just to make your own plans without worrying the other person is bored, etc...

Yes I love it.

I see that for sure. I would say I'm a bit of both and really it depends on my mood - sometimes I love surrounding myself with people and other times I want to cocoon myself up alone, lock the doors, put on some lo-fi and read a book

But you're right, it's so ideal for introverts.

Love solo travelling, and most of my travels around the world have been just that.

Ninastar 17-07-2025 08:12 PM

Nothing worse than travelling with someone who doesn’t stop talking when you just wanna sit quiet and enjoy yourself

And let's face it, you've been bloody everywhere!

I love travelling alone. I drove down the American Pacific Highway alone, toured Transylvania alone, travelled from Morocco to Libya alone, although I had to have an escort in Algeria. It's the best thing... like @Ninestar says, nothing worse than a chatterbox when you just want to be quiet.

Nearly but not quite yet!

That sounds like an interesting adventure - Morocco to Libya. When did you do that?

Ooo can't remember.... 2016 maybe? 2017... I was on here at the time. I got to camp out in the desert, I have never seen so many stars. I have an uncle buried in Knightsbridge Military Cemetery in Libya, I was desperate to see his grave but because of the political climate there, and the fact I'm a big old Yid, it was too dangerous.

Benjamin 17-07-2025 08:41 PM

Ahhh that’s cool. Camping in the desert is amazing and so tranquil. That’s a shame about your uncles grave though.

I don’t really know much about Algeria or Libya if truth be told. They’ve never featured highly in my travel list. Worth visiting, when the time is right?

We should totally go to Morocco some day. Maybe in a parallel-world.

I don't hanker to visit either again. But I do love Tunisia. There's a lot of history, Carthage is really worth seeing if you haven't been. The people are lovely, I'd definitely go back there. I've never been to Egypt but it's on the list.

I can see us haggling in the souk before bubbling a hookah.

Absolutely.

Vanessa 17-07-2025 09:31 PM

I've been to Algeria and lets just say I was glad I wasn't travelling alone.
There was armed police everywhere

Noted haha.

Egypt also has never been high on my list, which in theory it should be as it offers a lot of things which appeal to me.

My mum had 2 regrets before she died....one being not living long enough to watch her grandkids grow and the second being never visiting Egypt. My Dad gave in to every whim of hers but that. He never fancied Egypt for some reason. They travelled a lot but he put his foot down on there....he has felt guilty ever since

My pops started off his travels in Egypt, in the early ’70s. He had a lot to say for it. Ditto for Singapore (in terms of how extremely clean it is).

Sounds amazing! I really really want to go to Morocco.

I’d love to do a driving tour of the U.S, visiting some of the major National Parks. I plan on doing it for my husbands next milestone birthday as it’d be his dream holiday.

Not sure I have the guts to drive in another country solo though, I’m a bit wus when it comes to driving so fair play!

i had the worst food poisoning of my life in tunisia, and the "5 star" hotel i stayed at, the currency exchange desk tried to con me out of money, so i'm not in a rush to go back there

I've travelled a lot on my own over the years. Sometimes its great, other times a bit of a pain
