What's the worst start to a vacation you have had?

Having to call maintenance out within 10 minutes of arriving due to no electricity

Mine was actually recently. Stayed at an air bnb with a wood burning hot tub. We got there at 8pm and the hosts had to go away for the day and messaged us to say they were sorry not to be there.

We had brought a takeaway just before arriving, so as my OH dishes it up so we could eat outside, I went to the hot tub and saw they’d already filled the burner with wood, so I lit it.

Sat down and had our dinner, and after about 30 minutes, my OH suggested we get in the hot tub. I went upstairs to get my swim shorts on. I suddenly hear him shout to come down.

He’s opened the lid and there was no water in the hot tub and it was scalding hot fibre glass. Needless to say we panicked and I instantly threw the hose in the burner to put out the fire to stop it getting hotter. In doing so all the ash and shite went into the dry hot tub, along with some hose water.

We then let it cool and filled it up to check we hadn’t broken/cracked it anywhere.

Luckily it was all okay, but I was really stressed out about the hot tub and couldn’t relax the whole weekend. I got that stressed (as there wasn’t a way for us to empty it - needed a special key to drain it) I brought a £4 sieve to sieve out all the ash and **** to try hide our error.

Obviously that was a fruitless task. So as there was a tree above the tub which kept dropping leaves and stuff in I just picked up some more and popped it in to try make it look like that.

But, I stand by my statement WHO DOESN’T fill the hot tub with water, especially if you’ve already put in firewood to warm it! The hosts even messaged us to say they were not going to be there, so should have said there’s no water in it. Like would you lift the lid to check if there was water in it if you saw the wood burner had been filled with wood ready to burn?

You should have put the water in the tub instead of trying to out the actual fire underneath, it would have cooled down the tub and you could have gotten in after

My OH tried but I snatched the hose off him and told him not to. In case the sudden cooling cracked it.

But yeah kind of crazy the owners hadn't filled the hot tub(or let you know you'd have to do it yourselves), people don't book places with hot tubs to not use them (generally)

You should never. Massive risk of cracking/breaking.

On a boat trip to island from Scotland for a days sightseeeing. I had about 20 quids worth of cannabis resin on me. I wasn't aware that there could be checks at the other side so panicked and ate the lot. My wife was very impressed at the meal I treated us to when I started pouring sugar all over it thinking it was salt. My uncontrollable guffawing didn't help. It was part of our honeymoon as well. Perhaps the start of the slippery slope as well.:joker:
