What do you think of Japan's Singles Tax policy?

Should it be a policy that the UK adopts?

Or are you completely against the idea?

If I were the leader of Japan, I think encouraging them to spend less time in work, and also less time away from their devices by setting up big community events within the country would probably see some people hooking up.

Also dating sites are a disaster imo.

Yes it's not going to fix the problem if it is a cultural issue, which isn't addressed by this. My longtime friend has two daughters and had to quit a for life job to give them the support emotionally they deserved. Otherwise he wouldn't be around. Leaving a company is like committing a major sin so he effectively had to leave the city and start over back in his family's rural hometown. Even though he passed govt exams, it will follow him that he left a very good job. It's seen as a sign of selfishness. He and his family are happier, but not everyone is able to take that risk but the youth do seem to be more willing...

Here in the UK we already basically have this system to a certain extent - as someone with no children I pay tax that, amongst other things I benefit from, contributes to a lot I don’t - things like a child's education and child benefits. It’s all good because it benefits society as a whole.

This is such a tiny amount (in GBP terms I think I calculated they’d be wanting someone on 20k to pay £3 a month).

I don't think the UK would need to adopt anything additional to what it already has in terms of additional tax for those without kids or those who aren’t married, but it does need to make having children more affordable. It can do that without penalising those choosing not to have kids or worse, those who biologically cannot.

Japan’s Government would do well to work to discover why their birth rates are declining and fix from within….

even our local community charge is weighted heavily against single occupancy. Single people have always paid more for almost everything. Society in general is weighted toward the family. I don't think its a particularly bad idea but single people should be recognised for the positive contribution they make toward society and they certainly aren't at the moment
