BRITAIN'S best-loved pub is to get a modern makeover after Coronation Street bosses decided the Rovers Return was "dated".

In a move that will outrage millions of soap fans, producer Steve Frost has ordered a revamp of the famous boozer.

The Rovers has barely changed since it first appeared on our screens in 1960.

But Frost insisted: "It's quite dated now and we will be giving it a much-needed facelift.

"Our designer is working on plans at the moment."

Landlord Steve McDonald, played by Simon Gregson, will have the task of dragging the Rovers into the 21st century.


Rovers regulars have fought off several previous bids to change the look of the pub.


Angry protests forced the original Corrie landlady, Annie Walker, to scrap plans for a total renovation in 1961.


And seven years ago, regulars Mike Baldwin, Fred Elliott and Duggie Ferguson took over the bar to save it from being turned into a "fun pub" called the Boozy Newt.


The Rovers has changed only once - after a fire which gutted the building in 1986.
