Nana

My family tends to call mothers mothers "Grandma", and dads mothers "Granny".

What do yours call them??..........

Janette 13-07-2003 06:13 PM

I called my mother's mother granny and my father's mother grandma.

My darling offspring calls my mother nana and his father's mother grandma.

It all gets very complicated.

When I was a child :

Mother's parents- Grandma and Grandpa.

Father's - Granny and Grandpa.

My children called both Grandpa's, Grandpa and both Grandma's , Grandma with their names attached as both sets had said they wanted to be called Grandpa and Grandma.

The same has happened with my grandchildren. Mr. Boris and I are Grandpa and Grandma but are diferentiated from the other Grandparents by our names.

The odd thing is that in both cases the 'other' set of Grandparents had traditionaly been called 'Nanna and Grandad'.

:love::love:but hey....what does it matter if all are happy 1

As my Grandma always said

" you can call me what you like as long as you don't call me late for my dinner " boom boom !

I had intended to be Grandma but my son-in-law's parents decided they would be Nanna and Grandad, so my grandaughter flatly refused to call me Grandma:conf:. In the end I gave up and I'm now Nanna. Oh well!

My son and his wife are having a baby any day now and I am going to try for Grandma again but I suspect it won't work! What does it matter anyway. I certainly don't see My OH as grandpa though, sounds like a Victorian patriarch!

I call my mums mum Grandma and my mums dad and dads dad Grandad

BusyBee 13-07-2003 09:20 PM

My children have an Other Nanny and Nanny down bottom. Dont ask me to explain.

Unfortunately both OH and my dad died before they were born.

They also had a Nanny Weston (great grandmother) and a Nanny opposite (great grandmother who lived opposite Other Nanny).

In Bristol mothers are normally referred to as Our ma (pronouned as huh only with an m). Fathers are normally dad.

Romantic Old Bird 13-07-2003 11:48 PM

I called mine grannie and grandad

My children called my mum Grannie (my Dad didn't live to get called anything, but I would guess if would be Grandad)

They called OH's parents Opa and Oma - because they were in Holland of course, although 'Oma', having been born in Maryhill, Glasgow, preferred 'Nana'. Personally, I don't like 'Nana'.

In October I hope to be a Grannie and OH want s to be an Opa.

Janette 14-07-2003 12:24 AM

I always felt Granny sounded too old for someone as young as my mother was when my son was born.

Nana seemed more "user-friendly" somehow!

Well both my Dad's parents have been dead my whole life, and my mum's parents hate my dad and so hate me (I have a half sister and they loved her dad, and so they immediately took a disliking to me because of mine :bawling:) But I guess if I ever got to see them I would call them Grandma and Grandpa (by the way, what a strange topic??)
