Christmas Number One

What do you think?

Will it be

The Darkness
Avid Merrion
Ozzy and Kelly
Michael Andrews (mad World)
Shane Ritchie
Cliff or the Cheeky Girls

I like the Darkness......... a great future Christmas compilation favourite

It won't be the Pop Idols though - their record is expected to only reach number 5. And Simon Cowell said he would eat his hat if it didn't get to number 1.

Has the bubble burst?

BigSister 20-12-2003 01:10 PM

Yeah James I thought he said that
I think it will be the Darkness

AndyJK 20-12-2003 04:09 PM

There's a good selection of songs aiming for no 1 this year, and I think The Darkness will edge it through to the top spot.

My brother-in-law has a "The Darkness Claim to Fame".

He went to the same school as them in Lowestoft and they drink in his local pub.

There, just thought I share that with you ..... :joker:

BusyBee 20-12-2003 09:01 PM

I hope the Darkness make no. 1 although I do love "Mad World".

Good one Di! We all have a tentative connection to someone.......

I used to go to the same pub/ hang around in the same crowd as Bernie Taupin (Youngsters may not know that he was/is Elton John's lyricist)

OH went to school with the manager of Glasgow Rangers and the manager of the Dutch National team (ex-Celtic)

OH was also the road manager of 70's group Golden Earring - before they made any money (you know the original singers of Venus - 'you're my venus, you're my fire' etc)

OH and I sat and watched Bono walk right past us at JFK last week and we were both too knackered to say or do anything.......

and anyway he is related to No 1 son's girlfriend, so with luck and a fair wind and No1 son eventually making some sort of commitment to a woman...I might see him again at the wedding!

Just thought I'd share that with you!

Perhaps we need a 'My claim to fame' thread!

Mad World got Number 1

Top 10 was

Sugababes: Too lost in you 10
9 Shane Ritchie- Im your man
8 Atomic Kitten- Ladies Night
7 Black Eyed Peas-Shut up
6 Will Young- Leave Right Now
5- The Idols- Happy Christmas(War is Over)
4-Bo Selecta- Proper Crimbo
3 Kelly and Ozzy Osborne- Changes
2-The Darkness- Christmas Time

LEE 22-12-2003 12:25 PM

I'm glad Mad World got to number one - I really can't understand what people see in The Darkness :conf:

Romantic Old Bird 22-12-2003 10:06 PM

I agree Lee it is difficult to see in the Darkness

You have to just enjoy them! They are great fun, take the **** out of themselves and some of the more deluded rock groups of the past - whilst all the time being excellent rock artists themselves!

I heard them describe their own style as:

'Rock with the benefit of hindsight!'

Anyway - Don't let the bells end will be a future Christmas classic, number one or not.

Mad World is a good record, like it, but full of seasonal cheer it ain't!

I did realise what I had written AFTER I had posted it lol, but I thought I would leave it there for some bright spark to pick me up on it.

I agree they do take the piss out of themselves but I still can't help thinking that they are just the most awful load of cr*p everytime I hear them lol

James 23-12-2003 01:24 AM

I thought the Darkness was just a pastiche really, I quite liked the Avid Merrion one though.

Anyway I've just remembered a claim to fame. There was a guy round my door a week or two ago working for Scottish Power (or was it Scottish Gas?). He said that he was in a band with someone called Doug White who was now on Pop Idol. I assume this is Douglas's surname - the guy who played the piano.

I don't know if it is right though - this salesman was a bit of a bull artist - promising to cut your gas and electricity bill!

AndyJK 24-12-2003 12:05 AM

Anyone else feel the new no 1 is inappropriate for Christmas? It's so depressing isn't it. I would have prefered something a little more cheery than this dirge.

"All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces".

I can imagine this song going down a treat with the elderly relatives :conf:.

And The Darkness were robbed :bawling:.

Romantic Old Bird 24-12-2003 12:46 AM

They were indeed Andy

I like the plaintiveness of this version of Mad World, but couldn't stand tears for Fears.

OH tells me they had a major falling out and no longer speak. Hope they don't have any probs dividing the royalties from this unexpected windfall.

They could always do what Reg Presley did with his money when The Wets covered 'Love is all around" and invest it in crop circle research........

LEE 24-12-2003 12:23 PM

I do agree Andy that 'Mad World' is not very christmassy, but I just love the song, and I'm afraid I can't stand The Darkness and just think they are overrated cr*p.
