Cerys' bits all over the front page

WHY'S CERYS ABANDONED HER OWN CREDIBILITY?
What has happened to Cerys Matthews? Just two weeks ago she was a genuine music star, a woman who'd survived the heady days of Britpop to emerge, credibility intact, as an acclaimed solo artist.

Today she's known to millions as the woman who lusted after ex-soap star Marc Bannerman in I'm A Celebrity.

Despite the object of her infatuation having a girlfriend of two years, Cerys, 38, made no secret of the fact she fancied Bannerman rotten.

Now in a breathless interview the singer says she's determined to make a go of it with the man who once played Gianni di Marco in BBC1's EastEnders.

She coos: "I'm in love with Marc and I think he feels the same. I'd like us to spend the rest of our lives together.

I've found a soulmate and because I'm a hopeless romantic I want to be with him forever."

Meanwhile Bannerman, 34, whose career after Albert Square has been largely restricted to panto, declared he wants the couple to start a family.

He reveals: "I hope to settle down and have children with the right woman. I think Cerys is that woman."

Can he really be talking about the woman who fronted Catatonia, one of the slickest, hippest bands of the Nineties? The artist who released two chart-topping albums, sang hit song Road Rage-with the fitting line "It's all over the front page" - and who recently recorded an acclaimed CD of folk songs?

For the fans who've followed every turn of her colourful career, the fall is precipitous.
Mirror music critic Gavin Martin says: "I've met Cerys many times and always found her extremely pleasant, so easy to talk to.

"She's also an exceptionally talented singer but her stint on reality TV is overshadowing all that ability. I don't blame her for doing the show, she's got bills to pay, but you can't help feeling she's better than that."

The final straw for many of her fans will have been the sight of her bottom on the front page of a Sunday newspaper in a sheer black pair of knickers.

Inside she poses in a bubble bath and curls suggestively on a sofa while reliving the moment she fell for Bannerman.

Cerys formed Catatonia in the early 90s with guitarist Mark Roberts, hitting the top of the album charts in 1998 with International Velvet and doing it again a year later with Equally Cursed And Blessed.

Martin says: "I think Cerys will be trying to live down the pictures of her in her underwear for the rest of her life. They do nothing for her credibility. She's full of charisma and was a frontwoman like no other."

Life in the fast lane took its toll and there was a nervous breakdown and a stint in rehab. Leaving the band in 2001, she moved to Nashville, wed country music producer Seth Riddle and had two children. But they recently divorced.

Her 2003 album Cockahoop got good reviews but stalled at No 30. Her last release, a collection of five Welsh-language songs, fared even worse.

Could that be the real reason why this serious music icon has taken her first steps on the path well-trodden by Jordan, Chanelle and Chantelle.

It's just getting increasingly difficult to remember that the girl posing in her pants used to be one of our most credible music stars.

Why Cerys why?

Retroman 03-12-2007 05:37 PM

I don't like it...
I really don't like it =[ *shudders*

Her face just doesn't suit the body, or perhaps it's her hair. Whatever it is, it's making me think she looked nicer with her clothes on. And I mean that genuinely, not in a nasty way.

Of course it has. At least air brushing is cheaper than a tummy tuck. Ask Janice!

That is because their newspaper group didn't sign them up!

Why Cerys? A lot of people will probably have lost respect for her after this. I hope this is a one time thing because it doesn't exactly suit her.

It's not like she took all her clothes off. It's nothing more of her than we saw in the Jungle.
