You know things are dire when you find yourself wishing for Mr Blobby to return. But as another wimpy X Factor contestant looks set to hog the Christmas No 1 slot, it’s hard not to feel sentimental about a time when a good, old-fashioned novelty hit bagged the top spot.

Thankfully, a group of British students are looking to cause a Christmas No 1 upset. Calling themselves, Anarchy Xmas, they are here to try and turn back the clock.

“It’s not fair that thanks to X Factor the Christmas No 1 is now nothing to do with Christmas or fun, but instead about making money for Simon Cowell,” says Durham University student and lead singer Tom Rosenthal.

The band formed on social networking site Facebook. “I came across a Facebook group in April called Let’s make This year’s Christmas No 1,” says Rosenthal. “They were asking for song submissions. Mine won! We recorded it in September in Sheffield. It was where the Arctic Monkeys had recorded their early songs.”

Student pranks usually live and die in the pub, but the resultant single, Smells Like Christmas Time, is currently at No 1 on HMV’s download chart.

“We’ve been canvassing incessantly on Facebook, Myspace and the rest of it,” explains Rosenthal. “We’ve all sent university-wide emails, I don’t think there can be many students who don’t know about it. Already it’s the most successful ‘new’ Christmas song this year. Unfortunately for us though, all the old ones are now also eligible and getting in the way. But we’re hopeful we'll chart well on Sunday. It’s not a bad effort for a bunch of amateurs.”

The song is rubish, if they wanted to sell a good song for charity then this was a wrong idea, the person sisnging CANNOT sing and the song is dull
