Web worries after suicide spate

From BBC News Online

Quote:

Social networking websites could be "romanticising" suicide, an MP claims after the deaths of seven young people from her area in the past year.

Last week Natasha Randall, 17, was found hanged at her home near Bridgend and a girl who is believed to know her self-harmed a day later.

According to the Daily Mail the death toll in that area is 13

If anyone here is finding life difficult to cope, please talk to someone like the Samaritans, don't follow these examples

I have sent an email to Bebo to ask them in light of this epidemic to put some kind of advert for the Samaritans on all login screens

supernoodles! 24-01-2008 04:30 PM

yeah that would be a good idea for them to do that sticks.I kow a lot of people who have commited suicide (teens),I met most of them while I was in hospital and the thing is I just dont think theres enough awareness out there to let young people know where to find actual help.

I saw one of the victims mum this morning on GMTV and she is devasted.I think the parents have to work with their children to tell them about this awfull story and reassure them that this is a copycat suicide and in no way think you're clever or big doing this sort of thing.

Did you know any of them?
Do you need to talk?

This was a near miss

The really worrying thing about that case is this quote

Quote:

Leah says she cannot remember why she tried to committed suicide and has no memory of the incident.
Almost as if something took them over.

Nope I dont know any of them but I think 1 or 2 went to my school as Its the Biggest school in wales

Its these teen hearthrobs with pre written life 'problems' who cheat death by crying for help [read : not really intending to kill themselves] and trivialising what is a serious problem is what makes me tick.

I have , however , no sympathy for someone who commits suicide. I have sympathy for the parents. I have sympathy for the friends. I have absoloutely no sympathy for the person however.

Sorry I had to ask, in the light of this quote

As it seems like some kind of "mental" virus

If one were into conspiracy theories one might start yelling mind control, although this seems more like mass hysteria causing teens to take their lives.

Possible one more

From the Daily Mail

From the BBC

They are trying to say this is not connected, possibly to allay panic

So just in case anyone is affected here

I don't think it's a pact as such, but it's became a thing. Anyone with problems/suicidal thoughts in the area can see that this is the perfect time to do it to get the recognition that they craved in life.

On bebo now before you sign in the samaritans telephone number is visible.

I'd like to say thanks Sticks for persuading Bebo to display a Samatitains information. It will hopefully help save many lives.
It's a shame that two more people have hanged theirselves in Bridgend over the past few days. This brings the suicide count to 16.
