Emmerdale hits 8 month low

Emmerdale recorded its smallest audience in more than eight months last week.

The ITV1 soap, which has suffered a string of lower ratings in recent weeks, drew 5.3 million viewers - a 27.4% share of the audience - for an extended hour-long episode on Thursday night.

The last time Emmerdale recorded a smaller audience was September 2. The average for the show so far this year is 7.2m (35.3%) but several recent episodes have drawn fewer than 6m.

During its first half hour, the soap was still top of the pile, with The One Show on BBC One interesting 4.5m (23.7%). EastEnders took the lead at 7.30pm, though, with 6.9m (34.2%).

Elsewhere in the 7pm hour BBC Two's Magnetic North was watched by 894,000 (4.7%) and The Channel 4 News by 856,000 (4.4%).

Five News attracted 382,000 (2%) from 7pm to 7.15pm, and ensuing cricket coverage interested 778,000 (3.8%).

It looks like Emmerdale is crashing and burning

Its only because its summer. Viewing figures tend to slump around this time of year although the overkill with the one hour episode is doing it no favours.

Even so it never usually goes this low for so long

Even "The Emmerdale Forum" has shut down

im not surprised really i think there storylines are turning into a bit of a joke i can see it being axed within the next decade tbh unless someting drastic is done

Spike 19-05-2008 11:31 AM

I'n not surprised the soap is just boring now

Shaun 19-05-2008 11:33 AM

That'd be because it's ****.

Tom 19-05-2008 11:39 AM

It probably won't be dropped, it still rates higher than most of ITVs other shows. Its crap though but soaps have a habit of digging themselves out of holes.

I stopped watching it a while ago.

I've not watched it since E4 arrived on Freeview with "first look" Hollyoaks, which itself has been getting up to a million viewers on occasions in recent weeks.

And really it's a bit too early to be blaming the summer for any drop in ratings.

It was really hot up until Friday. I think hot weather can be blamed ...

I never watched Emmerdale... but my mother used to, and she's found it so boring lately that she's stopped watching it all together. *le sigh*
