Well i've been to plymouth loads. And the only thing close to a beach there is the Hoe Lighthouse and that's just rocks.

Here's a pic.

From friends, I've heard Bournemouth Uni (and the surrounding area) is better. I know someone who went to Plymouth Uni and don't really like it.

LovelyL 22-05-2008 10:31 PM

thanks xe and lauren thats really helped, it said in the prospectus it has a "waterfront location" so wasnt certain if it was a beach or not.
i did love bournemouth so think thats helped sway my decision.... thanks again guys xxx

xe 22-05-2008 11:17 PM

Good luck there :hello:

Lauren 23-05-2008 12:34 AM

Ooooh... you've changed the title of thread to include Southampton now - I cannot recommend this enough! Someone who used to come on this forum (Sol) goes to So'ton and he loves it there. Such a good Uni, one of the best and very fun. He also lives in Plymouth so knows about that University and doesn't really like it.

Good luck making the choice

LovelyL 23-05-2008 02:23 PM

thanks guys!! so now its between southampton and b'mouth. 2 people ive spoke to from each have both said how good they are and really fun!! so this is getting harder for me:rolleyes::rolleyes:

facehead 23-05-2008 06:14 PM

haha dont go to plymouth, seriously. the uni maybe nice but the rest is horrible, go bournemouth - thats where im going :)

Xander 23-05-2008 06:18 PM

Plymouth isn't that much of a great place, not that very nice kinda needs updating etc...

LovelyL 23-05-2008 06:35 PM

i think i've been put off plymouth now... it was originally my first choice and at my interview the uni seemed really good but never got chance to look around the city itself...
so now it seems its between bournemouth or southampton??
omg this is hard!!
still thanks again guys for all your comments...its helping :spin:

What course? They're all pretty good unis so it's probably best to choose based on the area you like best.

Lauren 24-05-2008 04:23 PM

Academically - Southampton (if you mean the University of Southampton, and not Solent) is definitely the best. It's one of the top 20 Universities, and is part of the research Russell Group which is a highly-regarded group of Universities that specialise in research. Bournemouth isn't renowned academically (it's not bad or anything, just not famous for it). Though if you're doing a vocational subject, or something more hands-on then Bournemouth will do it better than So'ton.

Locally - Both have their ups and downs. I know Bournemouth is meant to be one of the best-located Universities in the UK, so obviously that tops So'ton. But thats not to say that So'ton is in a bad location. It's obviously closer to city life, but its worth bearing in mind that it's a nice city.

LovelyL 24-05-2008 06:00 PM

This is exactly what i mean guys, I know so'ton is academically an excellent uni but i didnt get chance to look around the city properly...big mistake i think. Bournemouth for location is beautiful, i loved it there and we stayed a couple of nights so got a good feel of the town itself, though i know what you mean about uni wise it's a far cry from so'ton.
I'm doing nursing so maybe it's not as important??
Thank you again for all the comments, its helping me :spin2::thumbs:

LovelyL 24-05-2008 06:03 PM

And it is southampton uni, not solent

Oh no, I can see the dilemma you have!!

Even So'ton surrounding area is really nice so I'm finding it hard giving a recommendation

For Nursing, So'ton is best according to the Guardian Education supplement, listing it 6th!! So that might be a factor to take into place.

I know its such a hard decision, i know southampton ranks high whereas bournemouth is 86th... but i am feeling more towards bournemouth now..... i think!!!

Go to where you think you will enjoy more!

If you get an excellent degree but have a horrible time - it wouldn't really be worth it.

Whereas if you get a good degree and have an awesome time - you'll look back on it happily!

If I were you, I'd choose Bournemouth. Remember, too, league tables don't mean much.

LovelyL 30-05-2008 03:58 PM

You're totally right Lauren, after much deliberation I have chosen B'mouth and Southampton as insurance. Hope I've made the right choice!!
Thanks for advice guys

Harry! 30-05-2008 04:01 PM

Southampton as its near Portsmouth!

sol 01-06-2008 11:14 PM

If you're going to do nursing I deffo recommend Southampton, it's a good department (one of the best at the uni) and the university has a very good reputation in general.
Plymouth I'd say is still a good choice for nursing, the uni is on the up in general as they have such a massive annual income.
Bournemouth I would avoid, it doesn't have a very good reputation and performs pretty badly overall in the league tables.
However if you're looknig for beaches, I'd suggest Bournemouth as Southampton doesn't have one either. But remember Cornwall is just down the road from Plymouth so beaches are deffo not out of reach.

If I were in your situation I'd firm Southampton, put Plymouth as your insurance and ditch Bournemouth.

LovelyL 02-06-2008 03:49 PM

Oh no, i've already done it now. I did it a couple of days ago.
I ditched Plymouth (i've been somewhat put off it after reading some posts although I did initially like what i saw) but thats declined now so no can do.
I put Bournemouth as my firm and Southampton as insurance.... and hope so much I've made the right choice.
It's been so difficult.:puzzled::conf:

MrGaryy 02-06-2008 03:53 PM

My sister went to southhampton. She did very well there and enjoyed herself!
