Zimbabwe

Well, I'm sure many of you have heard that Robert Mugabe is now clear to become President for another term, but what're your thoughts on the matter?

Should the UN intervene? Should there be stricter punishments on him? Or perhaps invasion is the only way forward now?

I think it's beyond doubt that Mugabe is a corrupt, ruthless and frankly evil dictator.

Shaun 24-06-2008 12:46 PM

Bump.

Nurse57 24-06-2008 01:07 PM

I can't see the UN invading. It would just lead to all out civil war. Sanctions. They have nothing anyway so what difference would that make? Mugabe has now openly stated that he won't leave power until all land owned by white people is taken back. Unfortunately he is giving the land to his supporters and they do not always have the know how to run the farm. Thus the food shortages. The only way i can see this ending is if someone takes Mugabe out. But then civil war could be the outcome.

Lauren 24-06-2008 01:11 PM

Take away Mugabe's knighthood would be a first step.

Nurse57 24-06-2008 01:14 PM

Some how I don't think he would be that bothered.

No, but the very fact he has it makes a mockery of us.

Nurse57 24-06-2008 01:17 PM

If we did remove it he would no doubt spin it that the old colonial master was once again trying to rule over the people of Zimbabwe and putting them down.

If we sneeze it can be spun the same thing

Nurse57 24-06-2008 01:19 PM

True.

~Kizwiz~ 24-06-2008 02:41 PM

Mugabe is a ruthless dictator who crushes anyone who opposes him.

AngRemembered 24-06-2008 02:53 PM

I agree take away his knighthood this happened to a Jockey some years ago Lester Piggott (young folk google him) lol

He was stripped of his knighthood for fraud, this shows what priorities we have on money and blatant missuse of power and care of people.
After that god knows, I think the UN should have demanded forces in there to ensure a free vote, thats to late now.
So its up to African nations to snub him place embargo's ect, its up to the rest of the world to shun him and his family from personal moves(he has his kids educated abroad) and hope.
Otherwise we may have another Iraq on a smaller scale, and I sure hope that don't happen.

You have a very valid point there, UN need to be involved and take action. Otherwise he will rein like Sadam did.

Stripping him of his knighthood should also be done. The world must act by shunning him.

Latest news is Mugabe has been stripped of his knighthood!! not sure the difference it will make but it certainly shows we as a nation do not condone this terrible dictator and his crimes against the people he should be providing for.

Hugo 25-06-2008 07:15 PM

I never understand things like this = \ lol

Interesting. He'll just put spin on it, I imagine, claiming that whites are evil.

Dan_ 25-06-2008 07:34 PM

Don't they rely on South Africa a great deal for aid? I think they should pull from out from helping them as the money is only ending up in the wrong hands of his corrupt government. The truly needy just carry on suffering.

The elections have been impossible for anyone else to win ever since Mugabe ever came into power and he's been allowed a free reign to do whatever he pleases for far too long now. He's a tyrant and he needs to be dealt with, perhaps serious measures are now actually called for.

Nurse57 28-06-2008 03:02 PM

The trouble with South Africa is that their leader Thabo Mbeki won't public criticize Mugabe.

Perhaps he will now Mandela has spoken out, far to late in my oppinion but, better late than never.
Now its up to Mbeki to do the same only this time a little more stongly directed and with more substance reagarding future action taken against him.

Kore 29-06-2008 10:19 PM

Mugabe is a tyrant who will kill anything that gets in his way.

It's quite obvious to the rest of the world that Zimbabweans voted him because they fear him and his army.

The UN need to step in, but they won't because they havnt got a backbone.
And the US won't step in either, because Zimbabwe has no oil refineries.

Zimbabweans will continue to suffer until Mugabe dies, and I won't be surprised if another Tyrant takes his place.

fingers 29-06-2008 10:56 PM

Funny isn't it that in the Election which he lost it took weeks and weeks to count the votes, this one he, Mugabe, announces that he has won before the votes are even counted (well with only one candidate it must be obvious he's won/stolen the election)

JOSHUAH! 05-07-2008 11:02 PM

Interesting to hear on the news tonight about a tape from a prison officer in Zimbabwe who has video of them being forced into voting for Zanu PF (Mugabe's party) so therefore evidence of vote rigging.

He needs to be stopped, but he won't be. He doesn't care about sanctions, having his knighthood removed, or anything like that. He won't give a damn. I just really cannot understand how he can stand at various rallies and call Britain, when he is killing his own people, just for power of a country which is in a terrible state. I don't think he even cares about his people, if he would, he wouldn't kill them or have them beaten up. He just wants to regain power to look strong. His supporters are obviously brainwashed aswell.

First off, allies need to stop all connection with him. South Africa for one. Various other presidents in the Africa region have already condemned Mr. Mugabe's regime.

The UN should stop saying that MDC and Zanu PF should meet and try to have a shared power agreement. The MDC should be in full power, not shared. Also, Morgan Tsvangari will certainly not share power with Mugabe.

Mugabe was certainly not the most popular at the recent African Unions meeting in Egypt, with one African president saying Mugabe should be struck off from being in the union. That should of happened, but it didn't. Also, Mugabe's spokesman said that the west can "go and hang, go and hang a thousand times" as they have "no proof" of the various beatings, vote rigging etc. Well thats wrong, BBC, ITV, Sky and international channels have all shown beatings by Zanu PF members.

If the situation gets any worse, the UN will have to intervene and just remove Mugabe from power by some form of strength. Surely he cannot be allowed to remain in power much longer?

Tom 06-07-2008 01:08 PM

Its a little extreme but I think the only way to get rid of him would be to assassinate him.

Saying that its not that extreme in comparison to what he does (well not him personally but you can see what I'm getting at).

An accurate prediction me thinks. Mugabe gone won't make an atom of a difference. The hoodlums behind him will simply have a new and younger leader. possibly even more ruthless.

The disunited nations are a waste of space and time they will never enforce anything......Indeed the people will continue to suffer at the hands of hoodlums till the end of time....

Spike 11-07-2008 01:17 AM

Its hard to find a solution which doesn't effect the people of Zimbabwe and which can help the problem
I think the only solution is invasion, and to kill him and his top men.

Probably correct but it will never happen. Two many fingers burnt invading Iraq to change a regime.....Once bitten....The West won't intervene by force and neither will the African block.
