Is it wrong to hate a close family member?

I really, REALLY hate my brother for reasons I won't go into at the moment, but I wanted to know if it's wrong to do so? I mean, people always say 'Blood is thicker than water', but in this case it just doesn't work. I know it sounds really spontaneous for me to say so. And I'm talking about it in general. Of course you'd hate a parent or sibling if they assualted you physically all the time. Answers would be appreciated. Oh, and I mean 'close' as in siblings/parents.

In my opinion; with good justification, I don't think it's wrong at all. If there's a perfectly fine reason behind it, then I don't see there being any problem.

Jackie 08-07-2008 09:20 PM

Well it depends on what they've done, and if you can forgive them.

Hugo 08-07-2008 09:20 PM

Everybody hates their siblings sometimes, its perfectly normal for you to say, 'Oh I hate them!', because you probably have to live with them 24/7 and you can't be best friends all of the time. I'm sure you like them most of the time rather than hate them. Everybody falls out.

MrGaryy 08-07-2008 09:20 PM

I dunno. I have a strong dislike my sister. Infact my other sister doesn't even talk to her any more. And my Dad hasn't spoken to his brother for about 15 years. And my Mom's brother hasn't seen her in three years!

Lauren 08-07-2008 09:22 PM

It depends, do you actually mean "hate" ? As in, no love at all, no remorse if they died etc.

Even physical/emotional abuse can't take away every ounce of love.

I have never hated my siblings but imo it is okay if there is a reason behind it.

Rory 08-07-2008 09:25 PM

When you grow up things will maybe change and you'll get closer. If he's younger than he's probably not mature enough, and with age you might become closer. I don't think it's wrong to dislike a family member, but you can't hate them as they'll always be in your life.

That's a reason to dislike a family member. If he's a scumbag and does stuff like that, then I'd dislike him as well; but if he whines and gets his way whenever he wants your parents to buy him a Wii, that's not really a reason to hate him.

Jackie 08-07-2008 09:30 PM

I treasure every minute when I'm with my family I losted my daughter 4 years ago and it made me realise one day we're here and tomorrow we could be gone so I make every effort I can to go and see my family and do things for them because I never know if you're see them again not a nice thought but it's so true.

I strongly doubt you hated your mum. Maybe you disliked her to a great extent...

Sarah. 08-07-2008 09:38 PM

I actually strongly dislike my brother. I won't say hate... yet. But some of the things he has done give me a good reason to use the word hate.

MrGaryy 08-07-2008 09:40 PM

Lauren I LOVE your banner!

My Uncle spun a story to a local newspaper about my Dad's business and stole from my granny.

Killian 08-07-2008 09:41 PM

My brother has teased me all my life about my weight and called me a '******' in front of all his friends, and told them so on MSN too. I don't know, maybe he was just trying to be impressive.

Tom 08-07-2008 09:42 PM

I think its perfectly possible just as it is to hate anyone else. Of course theres a connection but theres a large portion of my family who I wouldn't care about if they all dropped down dead tomorrow.

Brothers normally do this to each other and also sisters but it's just normal i bet he loves you really deep down.

Spike 08-07-2008 09:44 PM

If i'm honest I hate all my family to an extent
I hate some members of the family more than others but I find I have no really love for any of them which sounds horrible. I could easily live without them for the rest of my life.
My mum is probably the only one I really like.

Well if it does happen you might realise how much you really miss them.
