How fast does you computer boot up from cold?
 

How long does it take your computer to boot and what operating system do you use? Include any tips on how to get you computer to boot more quickly.

mine takes around 20 seconds, Windows Vista Premium. I think the only way to make it boot up faster would be to wipe off all the things u dont use to leave more memory, the more memory you use the slower it goes, not sure if it affects the boot up though.

That is very very quick for a windows machine, are you sure it is cold booting and not coming out of hibernation or sleep mode?

A lot of vista portables I have notice tend to go into hibernation when you shut them down rather than actually fully power down.

He sorted mine out for me, much faster now.

Mine's Is Windows Vista, Just over 1 min.

Mine is OS X Leopard and takes less than 30 seconds for me.

Mine takes too long.. I have used up so much memory on here. I use Windows XP.

I'm amazed at the performance people are getting, especially those using windows XP or Vista without tweaking it. Vista is especially known for it slow boot up speed which was well reported in the press.

Mine takes a couple of long minutes - longer getting the the net up and running as I switch the modem off when not using it. My pooter is ancient!!! (6 years and was somebodies before that!!) added more ram and Hard drive. Need to update sound card soon! Cannot afford whole new system at the mo.

The idea is to keep the toolbar and desktop free of most things other than the basic running system - but the irony is it is mainly windows that hog the memory!!! Running XP.

Vista systems tend to go into hibernation so have to remember to fully shut down when you want to.

Can ask some of the people with Windows Vista what is on the screen when you start up?

If there is a message saying "resuming windows" then the machine isn't cold booting at all. It's simply waking up from hibernation.

My HP laptop boots in about 50 seconds from hibernation, however if I cold boot the machine (i.e. actually shut it down and start it up) it takes just short of 180 seconds to boot the computer to a usable state and it's not a slow machine.

It is a Windows Vista home premium machine with a Intel Core Dui T8100 running at 2.1Ghz with 2GB of RAM. It is a lower spec than my MacBook but it still good for a windows laptop.

I use Vista and I never make it hiberate. It always gets turned off off if not in use. So when i start it up its from being completely off for several hours and in the case today, its not been on in days. Its the fastest computer I've had to start up and my memory is almost full.

Are you sure you actually select "shut down" from the menu and not just hit the shutdown icon in the menu?

If you select the icon then the machine will hibernate, it's the windows default. It will look like it the computer is actually switched off, because it is, but it's not starting up from cold. It's actually reloading the system from where it left off the last time you used it from the hard disk. That is't cold booting.

It looks like it is doing a normal boot accept you get the message on the screen and you don't get the windows logo sparkling with the little Vista jingle.

Mine is definitely a cold boot which takes ~1 minute.

Hibernation takes about 5 seconds.

Yes I know exactly how I am turning OFF my laptop. I go to the windows start menu go to the arrow requesting more things to do and click shut down. Not sleep or hibernate.

That's really amazing what spec is it, who makes it and what version of Vista?

Toshiba Laptop. Home edition of Vista. Dunno the processing specs.

Just hit the Windows key (or Ctrl-Esc on keyboards without this key) and Break key together and it brings up the basic system info including the processor speed.

Interestingly that is slower than my portable by a fair bit. My processor is about 30% faster than yours and I have twice as much RAM. Yet my machine cold boots 3 times slower than yours!

I going to have to look at what rubbish it is loading other than Windows Vista.

I use xp and at a guess, I'd say under 30 seconds. All the computers I've had have been similar- I don't see this one as particularly fast. I didn't realise it varied so much? I thought all computers booted up around about as fast as this. Maybe you comp has a virus?

There is software you can use that can speed it up though if you are having slow boot ups. Registry mechanic for example, claims to speed up boot ups. Try also tailering the amount of programs you have automatically starting up as this will slow it down.
