SUPERMARKET BURNS DOWN IN INFERNO
Thieves sparked a huge blaze which today devastated a Co-op superstore.

A gang is thought to have started the fire when they used acetylene torches to try to cut through an automatic cash machine at the store.

The heat from the volatile cutting equipment started the fire and set off the store's alarms, so the gang fled in panic, driving their getaway car into a neighbouring field where they set it alight before escaping.

Fire crews were called to the burning store, in Burley Road, Oakham, just before midnight.

Senior firefighters quickly sent for reinforcements when they realised the blaze was spreading out of control.

At its height, about 50 firefighters were on site, with appliances brought from across Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

Incident commander Chris Bilby said that the building would have to be demolished to allow firefighters to put out the fire.

Efforts to tackle the blaze were initially hampered by metal security shutters at the superstore, which prevented crews getting to the fire.

Mr Bilby said once crews got inside, there were "several smaller explosions" from gas cylinders and they had to quickly get everyone out again.

He said the building was so unstable that it would have to be demolished.

Watch manager Kevin Woodhouse added: "We've been here since 1am. We can't go into the building to tackle the fire as it is too dangerous."

A spokesman for Leicestershire Constabulary said they were treating the incident as suspicious and the surrounding area had been cordoned off.

One witness, who did not wish to be named, said: "I could smell the fire before I could see it. When I came round the corner, on to Burley Road, I could see dozens of blue lights flashing, more than I have ever seen.

"The fire seemed to be contained in the building but I could see flames coming out of the roof and there was thick smoke pouring out.

"There were firemen everywhere, there must have been a dozen engines."

Nobody was in the building when the fire started.

Burley Road has been closed from the junction with Burley Park Road and Langham Lane.

Police said the road was likely to remain closed for much of this morning as investigations continue.

Do Morrisons do happy chicken? The one near me is good for meat and fish even if they have no idea how to run a store. I get angry when ever I shop there.

There is one in Corby.

I'm not a Morrisons fan, its very old school.

There is a bigger Tesco's in Melton... but lets face it.... its in Melton :bored:

I dont mind Tesco but its always choca block and now because its the only supermarket for 8 or 9 miles its going to be even busier

Somerfield have happier chickens, that are slow growing and given more room. There is a store in Stamford. I guess we will have to go there and stock up and put them in the freezer.

The thing is the intensively produced birds don't taste as nice.

Oh we know that one..... we would have to re-mortgage the house to buy a chicken from there. Its very very pricey. We do have a lovely farm shop even nearer where they have happy chickens poping out happy eggs but sadly the chickens arent on sale to eat.... just lay

Nurse57 29-07-2008 12:52 PM

Twas just a thought. Has my thinking cap on.

~Kizwiz~ 29-07-2008 01:01 PM

Its a lovely farm shop but as you must well know Rutland has some very posh folk here who like the finer things in life. Reds just been sent to Tesco on a lunch run but I bet its packed

Nurse57 29-07-2008 01:06 PM

Well you will pay the price for being a posh bird.

I could go to my local Co-op and overnight some happy chicken to you... for a small fee of course. You would look well posh having your chicken privately shipped in.

They just had a clip of it on the, what is coming up section of East Midlands Today.

Order it online and get a delivery, just don't use Asda they always forget half of your shopping. And if you buy branded stuff, it shouldn't really matter where it comes from?

BigSister 29-07-2008 02:32 PM

aww im sorry to hear that kiz nice to see you around as well

Lauren 29-07-2008 03:17 PM

Ah no, I half feel your pain...

In Lancaster (populated a lot by students) they only have a Sainsbury's... yes because students can afford that.

There is an Asda in Morecambe, but it takes 2 buses now.

Shaun 29-07-2008 04:50 PM

Urgh, I'd hate having just Tesco nearby...it's handy sometimes but there's not a lot of choice.
