BBFC defends \'Dark Knight\' 12A rating

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has defended its decision to give The Dark Knight a 12A certificate.

The film has come under criticism for its violent confrontation between Batman and The Joker and the story's bleak tone.

Keith Vaz MP of the Home Affairs Select Committee told The Independent: "The BBFC should realise there are scenes of gratuitous violence in The Dark Knight, to which I certainly would not take my 11-year-old daughter. It should be a 15 certificate."

However, the film censor has defended its ratings system, stating that the superhero sequel fell within the rules of a 12A certificate by implying violence as opposed to showing it in explicit detail.

BBFC spokeswoman Sue Clark said the certification was partly down to the fact that the movie was based on a comic book.

"Batman can jump off buildings and fly and The Joker is not a realistic character and bounces back with a smile on his face," she said.

Clark added that giving the film a 15 rating would prevent the majority of the Batman fan base from watching it.

"Younger teenagers would not have been able to see it, and they are the very people who are going to love it," she explained. "We would have ended up with far more complaints from people who wanted to see the film and couldn't."

So what do you think. Was it suitable for 12A or should it be ceritfied 15?

I think there are some scenes where it makes sense to put a 15 on it such as when Harvey Dent became Two Faced in the hospital but like the guy in the article said if you eliminated Under 15s you would be loosing a high percentage of the audience.

It's not exactly a film for 12 year olds, no, but I don't think they should be barred from seeing it at a cinema.

The rating here is M15 (I think) and I know a few little kids who would love to see it.

I'm nearly sure that it's 15's over here. Some parts are scary,I couldn't watch whenever the Joker put a blade/knive near anyone's mouth and the burnt face is quite distrubing.

But the film is going to be legendary so I understand why they're allowing it to be 12's.

They should make a batman movie for the over 18s.. More blood and gore with a great story. Joker giving out chelsea smiles would be good...

I think 12A is the right rating.
I don't see the need for it to be a 15 rating

Its quite a violent film, maybe it should be 15, but hey! they want more viewers :bigsmile:
