Grape & Gilbert - I\'m horrified!

I know this thread will get a lot of hate from people who don't think that fish deserve to be treated properly but I am horrified at the poor conditions under which Grape and Gilbert are living. There is no water filter in that tank, there is no heater, there is no light, and on top of all that it's way smaller than two goldfish should have! A general rule of thumb is 20 gallons PER FISH. Goldfish also need to have a light that should stay on for at least 8 hours a day. It's pretty clear the producers just wanted to put two fish in to be cute and get some attention but didn't bother to THINK about the actual care said goldfish would require. When treated properly goldfish typically live for about 20 years in captivity but these poor fish will be lucky if they make it to the finale! The producers need to understand that if they want to put fish into the house that's fine but they need to be ready to spend the money and time required to give them a proper set up.

Sensible and true. Just another example of CH4/Endemol's ineptitude.

Thank you. :)

bigbr0ther 12-08-2008 09:13 PM

Hmm... no one seems to really care. What a shame.

Locke. 12-08-2008 09:16 PM

I think I need to get a new fish tank then? I have 3 Goldfish in a bowl about the same size as they have in the house.

bananarama 12-08-2008 09:17 PM

So BB is fixing it for the goldfish to lose......Might have known....

Sam! 12-08-2008 09:18 PM

It depends on fresh water, tropical and marine fish. I don't think fresh water fish need a filter or lots of space.

30stone 12-08-2008 09:19 PM

my cousins dont have 20 gallons per fish? there about 4 times the size they seem content.

Fom 12-08-2008 09:22 PM

A heater for goldfish? haha.
We dont want to fry them, they are called Cold water fish for a reason :P

Conor 12-08-2008 09:23 PM

Gold fish do not need warm water, a light (Which can disturb fish from their natural patterns) or a filter.

They are stronger fish than tropical ones and don't need as much care. They can even survive weeks with no food at all. Apart from that, a goldfish bought from a major UK fish retailer like Jollieys should live about 5 years. Also, for goldfish, 8 gallons per fish is ample as long as you leave surface space to oxygenate the water naturally.

I have a tropical fish tank myself and had to learn alot of stuff on how to care for them ;)

Not sure but I think they are "fancy" goldfish and they need more care than fresh water.....It's also about volume of water and number of fish as to how fresh the water will be..

Joking apart I think the OP may have a point.....However we are not aware of the full instructions and materials supplied to the housemates for the fishes care......I hope it is adequate....

Matt08 12-08-2008 09:23 PM

They're coldwater fish and there's no legal recommendation to say that they have to have a light, water filter or 20 gallons per fish. :joker:

I thought that too. Have tropical fish too. Marine fish are the ones who need alot of space. Not freshwater.

Yeah. I could never look after marine fish, all the salt levels, extra PH attention, lighting levels, a constant temp, speciallist food...

hahaha the producers are smarter than you its not some silly tv programme they make milions and know alot about all this stuff so im sure theyv taken all the right percautions..

Benjamin 12-08-2008 09:54 PM

Trust Big brother, they obviously wanted Gilbert and Grape out of the final week. the bastards I had money riding on them winning!!!

rayheartbliss 12-08-2008 09:55 PM

noooo

get them out!

bananarama 13-08-2008 11:49 AM

Over on Digital spy there is a thread saying Rachel has had to take the fish to the diary room for BB to see. One of them is looking sick not swimming properly. OP could well be right with his concerns....

Could be a case of them being killed with kindness by over feeding.....Fancy Goldfish can become bloated and float upside down as a result.....

bigbr0ther 13-08-2008 12:05 PM

It's a shame that people have turned this thread into a joke about evicting Grape and Gilbert.

You absolutely need a new fish tank! Goldfish should not be kept in a bowl. Many people have expressed on this thread the misconception that goldfish are "easy." One person mentioned that his goldfish have none of the things I mentioned and "seem content." The fact of the matter is that the pet stores feed a lot of lies to get people to buy goldfish. Goldfish need a lot more care and attention than most people think.

They absolutely do need a filter and space. This is just another case of pet stores feeding lies to get people to buy more fish.

So, because there's no "legal recommendation" it's okay to treat fish horribly? I don't see why it matters what's legal and what's not. I never said they were doing anything illegal.

Er... right....
Rofl.

Because obviously a TV producer is going to be the right person to ask about proper goldfish care.

Nice to see some people still care about animal welfare - really well spotted BigBr0ther. If there's any hate, ignore it. I hope BB put this right soon.
