The Junior Cert is more like the GSCE's and the Leaving Cert like the A-Levels as it determines whether you get into Uni or not. And 4th Year isn't always optional, its really just a doss year but you have 'opprontunities' but everyone just bums around for a year.

England
Before School
Playgroup (optional)

Primary School

Nursery

Year 1
Year 2
Year 3
Year 4
Year 5
Year 6

Secondary School

Year 7
Year 8

Its only primary and secondary thats compulsory. We then have sixth form/college etc but not everyone goes to sixth form, some straight into work and some into vocational courses at college.

In Wales, we have the same as England (the one Tom posted)

After year 11 there's lower and upper 6th (2 years) which are optional.. then college or uni or whatever you want to do :)
