TV exec puts fathers body in a wheelie bin and goes on shopping spree

A SCOTS TV executive has today admitted murdering his pensioner father and dumping his body in a wheelie bin - then going on a spending spree with his father's money.

Benjamin Holding, a former business development offer with STV, killed his father Michael by hitting his head against the floor at the 70-year-old's home in Banchory on October 13 last year.

The 29-year-old then hid the retired widower's body in a bin in the garden shed, where it remained undiscovered for nearly two months.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard today that Holding had previously experienced financial problems which his father had helped him clear, but was still having financial problems at the time of the murder.

With fresh debts of around s7000, he had lied to his father and to his wife about being able to get a mortgage and buy a house.

On the day of the murder, he told his wife there had been a hold-up in the move then went to visit his father at around 2pm.

It wasn't until two months later, when Mr Holding's wife opened mail and discovered her father-in-law's bank cards were being used locally, without him having been seen for two months - that she became concerned.

"He admitted to her that, two months previously, he had had an argument with his father, that his father was dead, and that his father's body had been in a wheelie bin in the garden shed ever since," said advocate depute Alistair Brown, prosecuting.

"She called her mother, who attended, and, after hearing what had happened, that lady called the police."

Murder squad police found bloodstains at the site of the murder, before discovering Mr Holding's body dumped head-first in the bin, wrapped in cloth.

Holding had sent false emails pretending to be his father, to make it seem he was elsewhere in the UK, and had spent around s7000 on the credit card and bought a s17,000 car.

He will get a fine if it was the green bin.
