X Factor judge and Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole has labelled the Spice Girls "bitchy" and said they lack staying power.

She said she is infuriated when young hopefuls tell her they want to be the "next Spice Girls", stressing that while the all-girl group lasted 18 months, her own group has been churning out hit singles for six years.

She acknowledged Victoria Beckham and her bandmates' success - the group was credited in some quarters with providing the model for the girl band in its current form.

But she admitted it annoys her when X Factor hopefuls want to ape Spice success, and said she thinks: "'Piss off!' We've been around for six years - they were around for 18 months!

"We recognise what the Spice Girls did, but it really annoys me when you meet girls who go: 'We wannabe the next Spice Girls'.

"Yes, they had worldwide domination, but they fell out, bitched about each other and went their separate ways.

"We've been around all this time, fighting to climb each step of the ladder, putting out hearts into everything."

Cheryl and bandmates Nadine Coyle, 23, Sarah Harding, 26, Nicola Roberts, 23, and Kimberley Walsh, 26, shot to fame as Girls Aloud when they won the 2002 show Popstars: The Rivals.

Their subsequent single Sound Of The Underground went straight to Number One in the British charts, and this was followed by three more, and 18 more in the Top Ten, giving them the record for the most consecutive Top 10 entries by a UK female group.

They are now tipped for another Number One with their new single The Promise, which they performed to an enraptured audience on X Factor on Saturday.

The Spice Girls formed in 1994 and launched their No1 single Wannabe in 1996 before going on to sell 55 million records worldwide.

In May 1998, Geri Halliwell left the group, but the four remaining members remained together for another three years, going their separate ways in 2001.
