Do you respect an artist more if they [co]write their own songs?

Well I respect them more if they write there own songs, it just shows that there alot more creative and not so manufactured and also they turn out to produce better songs. I hate artists who don't write there own songs, as the song isn't really meaningful at it, as well as too the artist.

I'm not sure. I know I respect Take That more because they do everything themselves-they write and produce and think up all their own shows and so on. But songs in general if they're good,I won't dislike them if they weren't written by the artist.

Yes... I don't see the point in singing a song if it means nothing to you. Even co writing is fine, someone else can write it as long as you over look it and add in your own ideas. If your just taking a random song that you havent looked into, it kinda ruins the point of music. At least if your going to sing someone else's song, you research into it and make it apply to you.

No. If I like a song then it doesn't make a difference who wrote it.

No, its not the song its how its sung and performed.

I respect an artist based on how well they sing live and how good the song is.

I like all types of songs. Different styles fit different moods.

I do like songs with a personal emphasis on them, where they are written from the heart, or from personal experience. I think it conveys more emotion.

When I know the story behind a song, it gives a deeper meaning to it for me.

For all those who say they think there is no point if they didnt write or co write a song, then I guess you shouldnt be watching xfactor then, cause all the songs are rom someone else.
Also, I guess you wouldnt listen to remakes or cover of cld songs by new artists either.
I dont really care personally, some people are wonderful singers, but they are not as creative. Its not easy to come up with song lyrics. Most artists anyways, even i they dont write songs, at least participate in the concept, so thats all that matters to me!

Songs that an artist co-wrote/wrote themselves always sounds better than someone singing a song someone else wrote. That's why I have little time for artists who don't. IMO, it's not their song if all they've done is sing it. In order for a song to be theirs, they'd have to have creative input [in my opinion of course]. What's the point of singing a song someone else wrote? Chart sales lmfao. &that's the worst type of music.

An Artist who has no creative input with their music is not an Artist, they're merely a singer.

I totally agree with Xander and Fom, manufactured songs are never as good. I hate it when artists don't write their own songs.

I don't see why it should be their song if all they've done is sing it. Anyone could sing it. I don't care how big your range is or how unique you sound, you're not making the song with your voice, because as I've said, many people can do that. What others can't do is write how you feel.

A quote that always sticks in my head is Kate Nash when she won Best British Female at the BRIT awards, something along the lines of;
"I'd like to thank all the other nominees who write their own songs"
That shows how much more respect artists should get if they write their own songs.

How would you feel if you put your heart and soul into writing and creating this perfect song, just to be beaten by some crappy manufactured song where the only thing that belongs to that artist are the vocals just to please the charts?

I write songs so I know how hard it is so for them to sing it themselves and make money from it is an achievement...

Personally, yes - and this is an interesting thread. Obviously, I can still like songs regardless of who wrote them - but generally, whether I like a song or not, my respect still increases for an artist who writes their own songs. And it's even better when I like the song as well. To me, it shows their dedication to their music, as well as their talents within the music industry. I feel as though - these days especially - writing music is going unnoticed.

i respect the song and the meaning the artist has put in it.....
but people do get influences by songs...so its doesnt mean theres less respect if someone does a cover of it...
for me anyway.

Definetly I have much more respect for artists who cowrite their songs. That doesn't mean I disrespect artists who don't though.

On one hand yes...
IF it's good. You cannot justify an artist writing a song if its total crap. For example why would you want a #40 song if its written by the artist and **** when they could have a #1 which more people would like and would be a better song?

On the other hand no...
It can be used in a tacticle way, like an artist will plaster it all over their promotion saying "we write our own songs unlike 'name' so buy our records", I've seen this happen to the likes of Kaiser Chiefs...

I will stick to a song if its good, music is music and in the end its better to have a varied taste instead of being too serious about it.

I find that hilarious considering she writes songs about mouthwash, flossing and and pumpkin soup. Her lyrics make no sense whats ever.

Yes. I thought music was suppose to be personal and to mean something to an artist..
When I listen to some 'artists' today I can't feel emotion in their lyrics. I guess music isn't used to express feelings and emotions as much anymore. Which is an utter shame.
