Reality TV is all about getting viewers and keeping them hooked. And this year the producers got it spot on.

The moment the housemates stepped out of their limos on the first night they caused an instant reaction.

Kitten even got booed on her way into the house, which is a Big Brother first.

The thing I have learned from working on reality TV shows is that subtlety doesn't work.

Contestants need to wear their hearts on their sleeves otherwise the viewers see them as boring.

Look at last year's Big Brother. There is no doubt all the housemates were lovely people but that was the problem - people aren't interested in watching nice, they want nasty.

This year's housemates were completely different.

There was no hint they were playing to the cameras or frightened of showing their feelings.

This was clearly evident in key events such as the infamous Fight Night and Stuart and Michelle's saucy under the table romp during Victor's 'stag' night. Yes, there's no doubt about it, Big Brother 5 had it all.

There were heroes and villains, intrigue and romance - all in all it was a television bestseller and the viewers agreed.

But the question remains - what happens next year and will the producers ever be able to better it?

Well, I'll leave planning Big Brother 6 to the Big Bosses.

I don't know what the next Big Brother has in store or what will become of this year's lovable - and loathsome - housemates.

But one thing I am sure of is - it must have been one hell of an aftershow party.
