TEARFUL X Factor favourite Diana Vickers has hit back at her critics after battling illness to stay in the contest.

The Lancashire student was forced to sing on stage despite not having fully recovered from severe laryngitis.

After a wobbly performance, Diana, 17, who won through at the Manchester auditions, held her head in her hands and later broke down in tears.

But the judges made a special appeal to viewers after the shock exit last week of her friend and room-mate Laura White, 21, from Atherton.

"We lost a great singer," admitted Simon Cowell, who urged the ITV1 audience to pick up the phone to vote for their favourite act.

"You've got to remember, we didn't put Laura in the bottom two. The public just didn't give her enough votes. So, no point blaming us. If you want your contestant to stay in the competition - got to vote for them."

Her mentor Cheryl Cole said: "I think Laura's departure was a big shock to all of the finalists and to me certainly - and to the public, by the looks of things.

"But it just goes to prove, yet again, if you like someone, you have to vote for them."

The judges' appeal led to the highest vote count to date this series, while the main show was seen by 10.6 million viewers - almost half those watching TV at the time.
Diana, from Blackburn, missed the previous live programme on medical advice.

Throat specialist Dr Gerald Brookes said: "If Diana had sung last week, she could have been out for the rest of the show."

Even so, some fans were upset that she had been given a pass through, while front-runner Laura went out.

An angry Diana responded: "I don't want a free pass in this competition. I want to sing and to fight for my position. The fact that I couldn't get on that stage and do what I've been doing every single week was so frustrating."

Her mentor Cheryl said Diana's confidence was 'shattered to pieces' after seeing her friend Laura leave. Just 24 hours after she was first able to rehearse her song - Yellow by Coldplay - the teenager struggled through on stage.

"I know I didn't perform to my best. I was just terrified," she said. "I thought I was well enough but obviously not. My vocals aren't back to scratch.

"I was just really disappointed in myself. I do feel a lot better - I've given it my all and I'm just glad to be back."

After being saved in the public vote, Diana burst into tears and hugged Cheryl, who said she was glad viewers recognised the Westholme School student really had been ill.

Diana added: "I can't believe that. I'm so grateful. I'm just going to forget about this bad week - I'm going to come back next week and just give it my all."

Pool cleaner Daniel Evans was voted off by the judges after he found himself at the bottom of the viewer vote with Rachel Hylton, leaving six surviving finalists.

Diana is still the bookmakers' favourite to win.

Judge Louis Walsh told her: "Don't be worried, don't be nervous. You have to be in the final. You deserve to be in the final."

While Simon said: "I think you are the most relevant artist, probably, in the entire competition."

Awww poor Diana, she wasn't good last night at all, I felt uncomfotable watching her to be honest.

She did do pretty bad, but i've listened to her performance back and it may not have been 100% but it was good for her still being ill

i thought she was amazing last night i loved it

I don't think she was amazing, however she was good, not her best, but even Diana knows that, she gave it her all, and I liked how dertemined she was to performe, that's a true performer.

She was given quite an easy song to sing and she sung it very badly. Even if she was ill her performance wes awful.

I agree, it was an extremely safe song and she didnt sing well at all.

Even if she was ill she should have been able to sing that song.

Dian knew herself she didn't sing it to her best, I think had she not still been ill she would of sung it better, still she tired, she gave it her best, you can't ask for then that.

I know she was ill but it just goes to show you its not about signing anymore..... good week or bad, she still got votes

She got the votes because she is one of the favs to win, because she ispopular, because her fans didn't want to see her in the bottom two, because of the shock last week of Laura going, it made people vote more, you heard what Dermot said, it wasn't her best performance, but I still voted for her because she is my fav, along with Alex who I also voted for.

I think what Kizwiz is saying is that it isnt about talent anymore, its about who has the most fans and because they have the most fans then they will most likely win, and as Diana didnt do as good on Saturday, she still got through. People arent voting for who was the best of the night, they're just voting for their favourite. So it isnt really about talent, it just depends on the fanbase.

She was ill so I made allowances, she wasnt the worst either! We all know think shes the most talented and the show would be crap without her so thats why shes kept in, she deserves to stay based on what shes capable of and Im sure she'll improve as she gets better and if she doesnt get well enough she wont win

And I disagree, it is about talent we all know Diana has bucket loads, she just had a bad night as shes not fully recovered and they picked a **** song

If it's purely based on 'talent' it has to be alex, as I said on another thread. But this show is now becoming similar to 'Britain's Got Talent', where some acts with large teeny/sympathy support do well, but others with at least as much or more ability are pushed aside.

Totally agree. The show has not been about talent for ages.

Exactly, I know it human nature to pick favorites and they will vote when the performance is good or bad but she clearly wasnt at her best and I think she shouldnt have sung.

Her fanbase kept her out of the bottom 2.

I hope she is well this week because I dont think its fair to the other contestants if she gets thro on another sympathy vote [/quote]

Diana never got through on the sympathy, she got through because she is one of the favs and has huge support, her fans said theirselfs it wasn't her best performances, but they understood that she was still ill. Next week however, Diana will be back full of confidence. I still this she is one of the best there, she is defo the most different one there.

I agree that she is different but I dont think she has the most talent

Well at the start of the show theres less votes so I think the likes of Daniel get thru on the sympathy vote etc but as the weeks go on the talent counts more as more people vote. I know Diana is not everyones cup of tea, but she is a lot of others, and she is talented, very modern and different to anyone else whos been on there and makes the show more interesting.

Exaclty NettoSuperstar! there has never been anyone on there like Diana before, and I think that's why a lot of people like her.

She's not the most talented. If she was so talented then she'd be able to sing anything. She's being given easy songs to sing, songs that suit her voice, sometimes she's singing these songs quite badly yet the judges are still praising her. When I see her singing an Otis Redding song and singing it better than Otis or singing a notoriously difficulat song to sing and nailing it - like Alex and Laura have done - then I'd agree she's talented.
